Seahawks-49ers: 10 observations By Doug Kretz
Seattle at San Francisco
When: 4:05 PM ET
Watch: FOX
Preview
After breaking down film of both teams, Scouts Inc. offers 10 things to watch in this week's Seahawks-49ers matchup.
1. Seattle needs to limit its turnovers: Seattle turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions thanks to two interceptions by QB Matt Hasselbeck and a fumble by WR Nate Burleson. Thanks to a stout defense and ineptitude by the Rams' offense, the Seahawks escaped, but they can't expect the 49ers to be so generous.
2. Expect the Seahawks to continue rolling their defensive line in and out: The Seahawks may not have any Pro Bowl defensive linemen this year, but they do have quality depth and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley likes to utilize multiple personnel groupings to keep his front four fresh. They can pressure the pocket from the middle as well as with speed coming off the edge.
3. Seattle will focus on the ground game: The Seahawks averaged a very respectable 4.9 yards per carry in Week 1, while San Francisco held the Cardinals to 2.4 yards per carry in Arizona. Seahawks coach Jim Mora wants to have an effective passing attack that is built on their ability to aggressively run the ball. This will end up being strength against strength as both teams try to determine how the game plays out.
4. Look for the Seahawks to focus on TE John Carlson against San Francisco's defense: The 49ers' cover corners can be very physical and match up well against Seattle's wide receivers. Carlson has quickly become one of Hasselbeck's favorite targets and, along with running backs releasing out to the flats, we can expect Hasselbeck to look to Carlson over the middle and on underneath routes.
5. Matchup to watch: Carlson vs. San Francisco MLB Patrick Willis: Carlson finished with six receptions against the Rams, and Willis came up with one of San Francisco's two interceptions last week. Carlson is not one of the faster tight ends in the league, but does a good job of reading coverages and has a knack for getting open. Willis is a very athletic linebacker and does a good job of filling passing lanes to clog things up in the middle.
6. San Francisco will need to avoid turnovers: While 49ers QB Shaun Hill was not exactly spectacular throwing the ball in their first game he did manage to avoid throwing any interceptions. Coach Mike Singletary wants his offense to play smart football and avoid mistakes and turnovers. The Seahawks do a good job of taking advantage of turnovers and short-field situations so the 49ers will need to make sure to protect the ball
7. Expect the 49ers to focus on the ground game: San Francisco's offense averaged a mere 0.8 yards per carry and will need to improve on that if they hope to keep up with the Seahawks. Singletary wants a controlled passing game to feed off a strong ground game with the play-action fake freezing the secondary. If the 49ers can't gain more than a yard per carry the secondary is going to pretty much ignore the threat of the run. Look for more two-back formations with a lead blocker in front of RB Frank Gore.
8. San Francisco needs to pressure the pocket and force Hasselbeck to get the ball out sooner than he wants to: Seattle does not have the fastest receivers in the league and Hasselbeck needs time in the pocket to go through his progressions and allow his receivers to run their routes. Hasselbeck is most effective when he can get into a rhythm in the pocket. If the 49ers can get him out of his comfort zone with a variety of blitz packages they have a chance to create turnovers.
9. Look for San Francisco to attack the perimeter with their passing game: Last week the 49ers used a more controlled passing attack with Hill looking to TE Vernon Davis over the middle and wide receivers Issac Bruce and Josh Morgan on underneath routes. With Marcus Trufant out, the Seahawks lack a true shut-down corner and San Francisco probably will try some downfield passes in an attempt to score quickly.
10. Matchup to watch: Seattle LDE Cory Redding vs. San Francisco RT Adam Snyder: The Seahawks spent a lot of money to bring in Redding from Detroit to help firm up their run defense on the left side. He is a big, athletic defensive end who has the strength and bulk to hold his ground when at the point of attack as well as tie up blockers in order to allow his linebackers to be free to run and make plays. Snyder is a massive tackle who likes to road grade opponents and knock them off the ball. This matchup could easily end up being an old-fashioned slugfest.
Prediction
Seattle 21 San Francisco 19

Hawksfan, who is the LT for your team since Walter Jones isn't playing? Is it Locklear? If Locklear gets hurt, who is his backup?

Yeah for me heading into the game, the key is going to be on Carlson. He's turning into a fine TE.
I'm not too worried about their backs heading into the flats, Willis will have them covered.
