The Jacksonville Jaguars held close the Indianapolis Colts but lost the game in the end 12-14. The loss hit a second time when the Jags lost starting DE and team captain Reggie Heyward for the season with a broken fibula. This adds to a defense that is already missing starting DL Rob Meier (out for the season). Arizona will be traveling to the East coast, so if the time zone trend continues for west coast teams this will still be a loss despite the Jaguars defensive issues. If the Super Bowl runner-up's hangover continues for Arizona they will suffer though Payton Manning’s precision passing attack, and still be looking for their first win against Houston in week four. (1-4)

vs. St. Louis

Let’s give credit where credit is due. The 49’ers went into the NFC Champions house, played smash mouth football, and came away with the win. Mike Singletary’s intensity is starting to be reflected in his team’s defense. The offensive line on the other hand didn’t have the nastiness required to open lanes up for Frank Gore. If the `Niners win against Seattle this week they will have plenty of momentum traveling to Minnesota. Regardless of momentum they will have their hands full with the potent Vikings and the 10 AM PDT start time causing them to stumble. After that they get to travel to St. Louis and punch their ticket for a win. So if they beat Seattle they end up 3-1 after week four.

If the 49’ers lose to Seattle they will go most likely go 2-2 because hey - it's St. Louis.

Is this the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? After last year’s injury riddled, abysmal year the Seahawks posted a shut out against the Rams that answered some questions. 1) The Seahawks defense is much improved and much deeper, 2) the Seahawks have a potent passing attack when their starters are healthy, and 3) the Rams have fallen a long, long way since “The Greatest Show on Turf” days. Still many questions surronding the Seahawks remain. The game against San Francisco will be a great test for the `Hawks and may answer many of those questions. If Seattle comes out on top they will return to Qwest field to host the Chicago Bears sans Brain Urlacher. This will be a tough game but a stout defense and the 12th Man will impact the Bears offense and the Seahawks will get the win. They would have a chance to go undefeated over the first four games if it wasn’t for the combination that 10 AM PDT start time and some commercial spokesperson named Payton Manning. If the Seahawks win they end up 3-1 after four weeks.

If they don’t win they could easily go 1-3 because I assume that San Francisco would have revealed a weak point in the `Hawks game that both Chicago and Indianapolis would subsequently take advantage of.

The schedulers did the St. Louis Rams no favors sending them on the road three of the first four weeks. A trip to the Pacific Ocean followed by a journey to the Atlantic in consecutive weeks will take its toll on the Rams and their loyal fans who will start debating weather they should draft Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy. The only Ram that could enjoy week three in Green Bay would be an actual horned sheep grazing Lambeau Field. After meeting the 49’ers in week four the Rams will be 0-4.

After breaking this down I think the Seahawks will need the win more than the 49’ers will. With a Seattle win the `Hawks have a strong possibility of being 3-1 at the end of week four. A loss may very well mean a 1-3 record depending on what is revealed about the team's strengths and weaknesses.

As I mentioned before the Cards may be headed for the Super Bowl runner-up’s hangover. Then there is the whole Madden curse if you believe in that sort of thing. The bell chimed for the Steeler’s Troy Polamalu. How long before the cloaked Madden comes for Larry Fitzgerald?

I doubt that the Niners have the man power to hold down Adrian Peterson, so my guess is that if they beat the Seahawks they finish the first quarter of the season 3-1 with a two game lead on the division. Looking at their schedule I think that the Colts, Packers in Lambeau, Seahawks at Qwest, Eagles will hand them losses. The Falcons, Titans, Bears, Cardinals and Jaguars will be really competitive. Considering that I believe that after fourteen games are played the 49’ers would have a 8-6 or 7-7 record with the softest week sixteen and seventeen in the NFL: at home against Detroit and finishing out at St. Louis. That makes them 10-6 or 9-7 at the end. Most experts are surmising that nine wins will be enough to win the NFC West.

What to say for St. Louis?

I’d take Sam Bradford.

You 49’ers fans probably disagree with some of my assessments. Regardless I think this game goes a long way towards determining the division champion and will have playoff implications. Either way go ahead and fire away. At least the dreaded cloaked Madden is not aiming at either of our teams.

Something to add as far as the hawks vs colts game really quick. Everybody knows that the farther east the hawks travel the worse they get typically. A lot of that is blamed on the time zone differences. Mora has made it a point to counteract that by starting the seahawks duty day early. The veteran players were suprised how early they have to be to work now compared to when big mike was coach and have admitted its a big adjustment but that they think it will payoff when they travel.
