Yeah, don't worry Kolohe, like that 70 yard TD pass from Smith, these bombs only happen once a years.

yea kind of like that infamous JTO express thread. Things that funny only happen once in a lifetime.

You guys are never going to let me get passed that one. And if Alex Smith isn't in the league 2 years from now, it will be all yous' turn.

Actually no it wont be "our turn." I dont think a single Alex Smith supporter on this forum has said the guys gonna be a HOFer or pro bowler or GREATLY exaggerated his abilities and talents like you and some others did with JTO (remember the photoshop JTO/Montana pic...?)

The view of those that root for Smith:

-Would be NICE if he panned out because it makes the MOST sense for the TEAM. It solidifies the QB position down for the next 7-10 years.

Thats it. No one says Hill sucks. Hill is excellent. The only problem with Hill is we're going to be RIGHT BACK @ square one in 2-3 years. Be realistic. It has nothing to do with "Hill vs Smith," but everything to do with the 49ers. The sooner people like you realize thats what WE are rooting for, then you'll understand why people root for Alex. Hell, I WANT Hill to start this season but I still want Alex to be "the guy," because, like I said, it makes the most football and economic sense.

So I dont know what you'd be throwing back in our face if Smith dissapears a la Shuler style.

"Oh see he sucks..." - ok no one said he was amazing.

"Oh see he's a bust..." Ok fine, all we are saying is he isnt a bust right now with only 27 healthy starts. If he's gone in 2 years i'll wear a t shirt that says, "Alex Smith owes us 31 million."

"Oh you guys dogged Hill..." No we didnt. We just hold each QB to the same standard. Im pretty sure more Alex "supporters" give Hill props than vice a versa.

"Oh we were right about Hill..." Uhh ok, congrats. None of us ever said you would be wrong.

Honestly, the only people that stand to look like total jack a$$es are the ones who are so adamant about one player over the other.

Anyway nothing personal btw...I'm just sayin...

I never quite understand the arguemtn about "if his does stick around, we will be in the same place in 2-3 years? The guy isn't even 30 yet! A solid QB will play at least until 35 or so. If rreally good like Warner or Favre, they play till 39 or later.

So if AS pans out, he can play till he is 32-35, but if Hill is around, he can only play till he is 31-32? As history shows, AS is the more fragile QB.

Now honestly, I do wish the guy the best, for the sake of the team...

49ers reporter Matt Maiocco said on KNBR today that he believes Alex Smith would be best served by sitting and learning the offense thoughout this season. This way, he can learn with no added pressure. Then if we need him later in the season or even next season, Matt believes we could see a much improved Alex Smith! (He added especially if Jimmy Raye stays around for more than 1 season.) Alex needs the oppertunity to learn a system and become comfortable with it.

But we pretty much knew that.

Smith needs this...

The Smith we want to see consistently...

...The 49ers' starting quarterback Alex Smith was also outstanding, completing 8-of-12 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Smith, the third-year pro and former No. 1 pick, again showed poise while playing the entire first half for San Francisco, going 8-of-12 for 106 yards and throwing a beautiful 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Delanie Walker.

Needs to do all this...THIS Sat.

This is Key. I think that we ALL would agree that Smith can play but the question has always been can he play at that high level consistently. So far the answer has been no. He is like a roller coaster.

Agreed.

And even then, the peaks have been too far and few between.

because apparently some believe because you are a #1 overall you should be winning super bowls from day 1. I say sit him and start Hill. It can't hurt any so why not. If it gives him a chance to finally "learn" the offense and become explosive then I say go for it.

Jersey9er seems to be fairly adamant about the fact that Hill sucks and we dont have a hope of winning 8 games with him at the helm... The fact is, there are fanatics on both sides of the argument, its just that the smith supporters dont have very much to support their fanaticism these days.

The reason for that is Smith can do no right and is always wrong. Where as Hill can do no wrong. Smith has a great practice it is chalked up to "it is just practice" Where as if Hill has a great practice it is because "he has the IT factor" Smith has a bad practice it is "he is a bust cut our losses now and drop him" Hill has a bad practice it is "the defense just had a good day" Don't forget that Joe is the ring leader of the Smith hater circus

I do not worry about it myself, his history of irrational posts on the subject speak volumes about his lack of objectivity when it comes to the QB position. (See his posts about JTO from last preseason.)

Based on each of their respective playing time this preseason, JTO is again outperforming both Hill and Smith this year...

JTO was normally the best player on the field...for the other team. He threw them the ball whenever they needed a clutch turnover and often folded like a chair under pressure for them. JTO was a defensive coordinators dream, a player with all brawn and no brain

I'd personally much rather have a QB who plays with no fear of making a mistake than one who seems to be almost paralyzed by that fear... Its just interesting that people are continually willing to give Smith one more chance seemingly every year, but laugh at the idea of giving JTO one offseason to improve on his weaknesses.

The fact is, JTO demonstrated the most upside of any QB we've had on our roster in recent memory which won us some games last year while making critical mistakes which lost us some games, but we were so quick to kick him to the curb once he struggled.

I would have at least liked to keep him on the roster this year (not as the starter - Hill earned that last year) to operate out of a more conservative offense which isnt based on 7-step drops and 'throwing-open' on seeming every down - and see if he could improve... Instead, we brought on Damon Huard who has absolutely zero future in the league.

The respective weaknesses of JTO and Smith are both serious in nature, but which is easier to improve upon - pulling the trigger too quickly or hesitating to pull the trigger at all???

Well pulling the trigger too quickly led JTO and our team to way more turnovers compared to Smith. I could be wrong though.

I'm on my phone but maybe someone can compare Alexs stats from 2006 to JTO in 2008 (after the same amt of games of course) and see who had the better record and/or stats.

Two different philosphies of offense - Turner's was based on a power running game whereas Martz looked to throw first... Thats my point, i would have liked to see how JTO would have performed in a more stable offense.

No matter where Martz has gone, turnovers have followed - they just seem to be an unavoidable byproduct of his offense... The only reason why Hill didnt fall victim is because the play calling was altered to account for his lack of arm strength - no 7-step drops and a higher dependance on the running game (thanks to singletary).

In the end - stats only tell part of the story...

The offense simply flows better with Hill under center and Sing is seeing this.
Matt M interviewed with the Razor & Mr T this after noon and gave a brutal analysis of Hill vs Smith. You'll just have to listen to it:

Matt Maiocco interview

And of course, Ralph manages to interrupt almost every single sentence Matt utters. He is so absolutely miserable to listen to.

the blog on today's practice against Oakland suggest Hill is starting to pull ahead.
