Wow good day.
Hill shows he can throw deep if need be. And Alex throws 20 straight completions and showing he can throw underneath.
Damn man can't one of them just have a meltdown haha. Jk. This is good news if you're a Niner fan. We have two decent QBs.

So,let me see if I got this right. You guys think that Shaun Hill would have done any better than Smith on the 05-06 teams?
Absolutely, because while Alex Smith is more physically gifted, Shaun Hill is a more talented quarterback.
He is our Chad Pennington. He gets no respect.
I personally think Hill would never have made it through the 06 season because of being sacked so much.
Smith was sacked only 35 times in 06. get your facts straight buddy.
You show me where I said otherwise kid...and for the record kid,35 is a lot of sacks, over two a game.
You just said in the post before mine in the quote that "hill wouldn't have made it through the 2006 season because he would have been sacked so much".
2 sacks per game is NOT a lot. No way in hell. the last two years, we have allowed 55 sacks each year. Now that is a lot and is a top the league.
2 sacks a game is more than I am used to seeing out of a niner team, but I have been a follower of the team since 1979,so it does seem excessive to me.Seeing as how you have only been watching them for a few years,I guess two a game would seem alright compared to the 4 we have been giving up over the past two years.

Its funny because in every Hill vs Smith debate, people will ALWAYS have some pathetic alexcuse for everything that Hill did better than him. If Hill did something good in 2008, it brings out people saying that Smith could have done the same if not better if he had the same team. If Smith did something bad in his career, then its because he didn't have a good team.
I understand that football is a team sport and no one should be put to blame completely, but people make it sound like Smith needs to have everything PERFECT around him. Hill was able to produce without having a perfect oline/recievers/oc. Sometimes you just gotta go out there and perform, especially if you were the #1 overall pick.
Whaaaaatever ya say dude. I'm just glad that Singletary is able to see the truth, and that folks like you are not running the team.
so niner4life21 makes a great point.....and yall respond like this.... I don't know if you're a Shaun Hill detractor or an Alex blind fan....or neither...
but I'd like a Shaun Hill hater or Alex blind fan to respond to what niner4life21 just posted...he made a great point that much of us here at the zone have been spouting for awhile now...
Please point out what he said that is a great point? All I see here is a kid comparing apples and oranges (06 team and 08 team)and trying to say that Hill and Smith had the same talent surrounding them when they were playing. You put them both on equally talented teams and the argument would be settled(like it will be by this competition). If,as some of you like to claim,Hill were such a better QB than Smith, there would be no need for the QB competition that is happening.Fortunately we have a coach with enough football knowledge to comprehend that Smith hasn't had the chance to work with a team with the talent level that this one has now.I agree with the coaches,Smith should have to outplay Hill to win the job,but you blind Hill supporters that think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread need to wake up and smell what you are shoveling.

Respond like this because we have all been over this hundreds of times, ya mean? Let's try again, but briefly because I have things to do...
What most of you call alexcuses are LEGIT reasons for a young QB to struggle. Just because he was a #1 overall pick does not mean he can walk on water and excel beyond poor pass protection, poor coaching, and poor talent around him.
If you need me to, I can enlarge the bolded part, as it seems to go in one ear (so to speak) and out the other. Singletary sees what WE Alex supporters see... this is why there is a legit competition.
No, there is a competition because the organization wants to save face. They don't want to come out and basically say, " ok guys, we f**ked up on the Smith pick. hill is the starter.".
What a weak ass argument, that is really beyond silly. So the team is going to stage a fake competition so they can "save face"?Your claim would be funny if it weren't so sad. That is right up there with the 9/11 conspiracy nuts claiming the government flew the planes into the buildings.Way to face reality there, maybe if you stomp your feet, hold your breath and throw a tantrum it will magically come true.

Do you think a team would immediately bench their #1 pick from 4 years ago? No they wouldn't. They would give him a fair shot at the job. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that the organization thinks that Smith is the QB of the future and better than Hill, their just doing what any other team would do when they have a #1 QB who has made a s**tload of money in the past 4 years. They give him his last chance.

Your crazy conspiracy theory about the team trying to save face is what compares to the 9/11 thing.Teams that think a player is no good simply cut their losses and move on,it happens all the time.No one is forcing Singletary or Raye, neither of whom have anything invested in Smith,to have this competition. They just want the best player to start, and since they do not yet know which QB is best for the job, they are having the competition. Most of the time the simple answer is the right one.We all just want the best guy starting, and none of us know which one is the best choice, all any of us can do is speculate. All I am trying to get across is that we should all keep an open mind about this competition and not jump to conclusions based on less than all of the facts, which to this point we do not have.Preseason will clear all of this up and we will have a starter.I will get behind whoever wins 100%,as any true fan should.

Yeah they would bench him. Dude no one even remembers the 2005 except us LOL. Teams will do what's best for the team. If they legitemately felt Alex sucked they'd bench him. See the Cardinals and Matt Leinart. They didn't care. Jed York isn't stupid and neither is Scott. And we all know Sing is a straight shooter. Cmon man. Weak argument. Let me guess you think JTO legitemately won last year haha.

If they cut him they would've lost a lot more money. Instead, they restructured his contract, which actually saved money. I'm not saying that they've already made up their minds to start hill, they are giving Smith a chance. IMO, they just don't want to basically admit that drafting Smith was a mistake.

C'mon man, that's totally ridiculous. So you think Mcloughan went up to Singletary in the off-season and said: "Look Mike, I'm not letting you name Hill the starter, you have to give Alex Smith an equal chance to win the job all through training camp, or else."? How do you think that conversation would have gone?
Look how well Smith has performed during OTAs and TC. Both Matts have said his toe-to-toe with Hill with his play, and that Hill is also playing his best football. Dude, it should be pretty clear by now the 49ers do not see Smith as a total dummy bust the same way this message board does.

Hopefully Hill isn't feeling the pressure as much as his blind supporters.I just do not understand why some folks refuse to face the fact that this is a legit QB competition where both guys will have their chance to win the job. However this ends up,the niners will be a better team for it,and that should make everyone happy.Once again...May the best man win!

Atleast we're supporting a player whos actually played well and won games, as opposed to Smith fans who only support him based of the, " what ifs", or the "should haves", or the " he would have done this if he had...."......

If they cut him they would've lost a lot more money. Instead, they restructured his contract, which actually saved money. I'm not saying that they've already made up their minds to start hill, they are giving Smith a chance. IMO, they just don't want to basically admit that drafting Smith was a mistake.
I think that if that is the case they are taking a bigger risk. They will be ridiculed for not cutting their losses if Smith goes out there and fails. I think he is in this competition because there is a real belief in the organization that he can become an effective Q.B. in the NFL.
