Smith goes 11/13 on mostly short/medium passes today. Hill goes 6/9 but hits a nice 35-40 yarder to Battle.
Two good things: Shaun finally gets a deep ball worth mentioning. Alex may finallly have some touch on short throws.
Lol bad thing: we still don't know who's better.

Rattay did fine with that 2005 roster....and I'm sure he would have did EVEN better with Antino Bryant in 2006...
Rattay and Shaun play pretty similar....both have quick releases and spread the ball around.....I'm sure Shaun would have done fine, most certainly done better than Alex with those 05/06/07 teams....
Rattay with 5 td's and 6 int's was doing fine...I guess we have a different definition of the word.He might have done fine in 06 if he wasn't put out with an injury from being sacked so often.Smith had no business being in there in 05,I agree we should have let Rattay take that beating.Smith would have benefited from sitting on the sidelines watching Tim get creamed every other play.He showed plenty of improvement in 06,especially taking into consideration how poorly the line pass blocked. In 07 the niners were dropping over 20% of their passes, yet we still won 2 out of three with Smith, who led the team to the victory against the Cards in spite of dropped passes and poor pass blocking.I am not saying that Smith will ever be a pro bowler, but you guys are so one sided in all your Smith bashing. This TEAMS successes and failures are not on one player,it is a TEAM sport.

Absolutely, because while Alex Smith is more physically gifted, Shaun Hill is a more talented quarterback.
He is our Chad Pennington. He gets no respect.
I personally think Hill would never have made it through the 06 season because of being sacked so much.
Smith was sacked only 35 times in 06. get your facts straight buddy.

That's great that you don't care how he looks in practice.
Do you care how he looks in preseason? Will your opinion change if he sucks it up (like he did last year) and Alex CLEARLY outperforms? I doubt it.

You show me where I said otherwise kid...and for the record kid,35 is a lot of sacks, over two a game.

My opinion will not be affected by preseason performances.
I already made that mistake last year with JT O'Sullivan, who by far looked better than Smith and Hill in the preseason.

Shaun Hill wins us football games, has a career 90 QB rating and people still want Alex Smith to start. Ridiculous.

JTO was a unique situation and doesn't compare. He DID look better and DID deserve to start. Who were you going to start? Alex was out and Hill was absolute garbage.
JTO was the only person at the start of the season who actually knew what he was doing.
My point is that, success in executing one type of offense does not necessarily carry over to another.

Fine, but that was a different situation. Right now with Jimmy Raye, there is no one player with a better command of the offensive playbook and system who should get the starting nod.
All I'm saying is, Shaun Hill has proven to be a more efficient, more successful in-game quarterback than Smith.
I want to see the team I saw at the end of last year for 16 games, with all the additions we've made this off-season off-course.

^^ I've said all along that if all things are even between Hill and Smith, then Hill deserves start.
But if Smith completely blows away Hill in preseason then I have absolutely NO issues in starting Smith.
Smith becoming the quarterback that we've all wanted him to be solves a lot of problems and gives us so much flexibility in next years draft. This is why i'm rooting for him.

2 sacks per game is NOT a lot. No way in hell. the last two years, we have allowed 55 sacks each year. Now that is a lot and is a top the league.

First of all, sack totals don't tell the full story of how poorly an OL protected their QB. Do you people have any recollection in how many times Alex would get rid of the ball a split second before getting crushed? This happened a LOT, and does not go down as a sack. You should give him a lot of credit for evading pressure and being fairly smart with getting the ball out...( and you wonder why the lower completion % ) As well as our OL did in the run game? They couldn't pass protect for crap. Pulling stats like this is painfully ignorant in discussing truth.
Anyway...

Raye spoke to the media for the second time this training camp. Here's what he spoke about: --He said it's "extremely important" for the 49ers to be able to hit big plays down the field in the passing game in order to prevent the defense from stacking eight defenders in the box. Advantage Alex Smith?

Its funny because in every Hill vs Smith debate, people will ALWAYS have some pathetic alexcuse for everything that Hill did better than him. If Hill did something good in 2008, it brings out people saying that Smith could have done the same if not better if he had the same team. If Smith did something bad in his career, then its because he didn't have a good team.
I understand that football is a team sport and no one should be put to blame completely, but people make it sound like Smith needs to have everything PERFECT around him. Hill was able to produce without having a perfect oline/recievers/oc. Sometimes you just gotta go out there and perform, especially if you were the #1 overall pick.

Whaaaaatever ya say dude. I'm just glad that Singletary is able to see the truth, and that folks like you are not running the team.
