Riddick has been hearing things about another 49ers quarterback, though—one acquired via free agency.

"I'll tell you what, I had someone tell me this just recently," Riddick shared with Rich Eisen. "They believe that Sam Darnold, in that match with Kyle Shanahan out there in San Francisco, that could finally be the spot that totally makes him become the out-of-nowhere surprise of the year.

"I had someone who I trust implicitly when it comes to quarterback play [tell me that]. I'm telling you, I said to him, I was like, 'What?' They're like, 'Just trust me on this one.'"

Riddick admits that Darnold beating out Lance in an offseason competition is a strong possibility.

"And there's nobody who's a bigger Trey Lance fan than me," he shared. "There may be, but I'm a huge believer. I couldn't be more disappointed for how things have happened for him. So I'm inclined to go, 'Look, he deserves the benefit of the doubt. He deserves another opportunity. He got hurt.' We just don't know who he is."

I mean both Darnold and Lance are talented, but Darnold is the more talented passer. If he puts it together and has the mental stuff (thus far he has not shown that), he would be the better QB, I'm quite sure.

As a 49er fan, I truly do not care which is the best, as long as the best plays. All I know is that the odds are good that at least ONE of the three are going to be very good here, and I'm happy with any of them. Would I prefer Lance or Darnold to turn out to be the best because they have stronger arms and are more dangerous on the ground? Sure. But I'd be just as happy with Purdy being the next Drew Brees.

Perhaps not, but honestly LAST year was a big part of it. Actually the last two years. In 2021 his pressure rate was 18.7%, but last year it was only 15.5%. Prior to that it was over 20%, and in 2018 it was actually over 30%. So it seems the 49ers were actually terrible at one point in pass protection, but they have improved quite a bit over the years.

We'll see next year, though.

That point was made quite a bit.

We will see.

Yup, I'm just glad we have Sam, in the event TL doesn't make strides here and BP injury has issues

he makes the room better than just TL & BP
he has a number of starts/experience they just don't have yet

Can't wait for this thread to be on page 5 because Darnold is inactive all season

If he is that means either he didn't improve, or Purdy got healthy and is still playing great, or Lance got better. It's win-win no matter what (unless all three get hurt).
I think they want the best shot to get past the NFCCG now and would elevate Darnold over Lance because of experience (if Purdy falters). If Darnold falters, then Lance. Lance would have to be on fire this preseason to be no. 2 IMO.
Sourdough Sam.

No he's not lol. It's not even the mental stuff. His footwork is trash. Tons of false steps and heel clicking all the time. People cry about Lance's throwing motion but not a word about Sam's? Dudes got a loopy throwing motion and still hasn't fixed it. Hero has talked about it in here for years.

What does talented passer even mean? He sucks at all phases of throwing a football. He's got a plus arm (not better than Lance's) outside of that what else?

This is where I'm at as well.

As long as we have a check-down option like CMC and a ton of short-area YAC monsters, and Kyle is in rhythm for play calling, there may not be huge differences between all 3 QB's in the end. It'll still be a run centric offense either way.

Each QB is a bit unique in their strengths and weaknesses but nothing to the level Kyle will need to install 3 different offenses for each.

May the best man win.

Sam's throwing is excellent. Regardless of the motion, last year per PFR he hit on a 77.1% on target rate. For comparison, Jimmy's on target rate last year was 74.5% and Mahomes' was also 77.1%. The article that said he may be the "best 49ers thrower of all time" might have been hyperbole, but it wasn't summoned out of thin air.

EDIT: since we're here, Purdy's was 77%. Lance's was mostly in a deluge so I'm not taking his low on target percentage seriously. It's bad data. But Sam and Brock were excellent.

IMAGINE - if Darnold becomes the next Kurt Warner... dominate the season and wins a Super Bowl

Warner was such a cinderella story I cant see it happening again anytime soon. Darnold has played a ton and looks medicore/hesitant at best imo. Can that turn around? Sure, but odds say don't hold your breathe and id rather see what Purdy/Lance do before him.

I've always liked darnolds talents too. I think his physical skill set and natural throwing ability is one of the best in the league, always have. It's his mental side that's always worried me. His turnovers and accuracy issues. Which can be fixed if he's in the right situation, I just don't see him as "the guy". I do think his physical skill set/natural throwing ability is better than Brock's and lances. I just think Brock has the best mind of all three - in my opinion. I obviously can't measure that.

but like you said, I just want a stud here. I'm confident one will rise out of the three. Idc who, as long as it's one of them.

The closest Warner story would be Purdy, no doubt. He was one pick away from being UDFA like Warner. Played because of injuries. No one expected much but they shocked the world. Purdy almost did it, and I think he would have, if not for the unfortunate injury. :/

Warner just struggled to make a roster more so than Purdy. The whole grocery store thing
