KS needs someone to pilot this thing.

He doesn't know if BP can (injured).
He doesn't know if TL can (still developing, not there yet).

He likely suspects Sam can. He's wanted Sam for years. KS loves Sam's game, and suspects with our roster, he can accomplish real things here. KS also loves TL's potential. So I think TL has the inside track here to try and meet that high ceiling potential, this offseason, he needs to show that. If he doesn't, and BP isn't ready, it's Sam.

You have no idea if Kyle wanted Sam for years. He wanted him out of college. Things change.

I've read maybe half a dozen NFL insiders who say KS has a crush on Darnold essentially and has for years.

Football related crush.

Peter King linked us to Darnold a year ago

another quote from Athletic
"The 49ers were reportedly interested in trading for Darnold back in 2021 before they ultimately moved up to grab Lance, so it's apparent that coach Kyle Shanahan is at least interested in the physical skill set here. On top of that, Darnold's best NFL football — by far — came last season with Carolina"

another one this time CBS Sports:
"The 49ers reportedly offered the Jets their first-round pick -- 12th overall in this year's draft -- in the hopes of acquiring Darnold, per Cecil Lammey of 104.3 The Fan in Denver, but the timing of the offer is a key reason the Jets didn't accept it. At the time, as in earlier this offseason, the Jets were seemingly still concerned about the shoulder of Zach Wilson, whom they've continuously been eyeing as potentially the new face of their franchise"

this is NY Post, spoiler alert we are one of the two teams:
"Two other teams took 'hard look' at Sam Darnold before Panthers trade"
"NFL Network reported the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Football Team each took a "hard look" at the 23-year-old quarterback before free agency began."

on your idea of things changing.. one reason KS interest probably hasn't changed is we signed Darnold.. so I am going to say yes the interest is still there

since the draft and the recent trade to the panthers. 49ers were rumored to be in the mix. now that we actually get him leaves anyone to wonder how true those rumors were

Nice find
Excited to see how this kid develops under Shanahan. He might surprise a few people.

My thoughts exactly, he's probably happy to be here on a contender with real talent and coaching.
Imagine if Darnold ended up being the starter and took the team to a SB win. All the talk about Trey vs Purdy but people forget that Darnold was highly rated coming out of college. He landed on a bad team with a bad coach like so many young QBs do. Obviously he struggled. He's with a much better team now with a better coach and a winning tradition. Not to mention he's back in California. I'm not sure what to expect but I wouldn't count him out.

If Shanny can reel him in and cut down on the boneheaded decisions, I wouldn't be surprised if he looks decent. I believe I was the most critical person on the WZ of Sam Darnold during the draft process, but I was surprisingly impressed with Darnold's first 2 years in the NFL. I thought he was going to make me eat crow after his 2nd year in the NFL, but it's been downhill since. The dude obviously has a lot of talent. I vividly remember calling him one of the best throwers of the ball on the move that I had ever seen.

"Keeps his team in the game while also keeping the opposing team in the game as well" was a quote I used during the draft process that perfectly describes Sam Darnold.

That's a good one

I think your talent is a key. He was throwing to Jamison Crowder and now Chosen Anderson. That was his key year 2, with crap coaching. Wilson as a comp for NYJ, got to throw to Moore and G Wilson, and we know about Saleh and his crew as coaches, they are doing the work.

If your guys are winning and not getting the ball, that was the prob with Zach Wilson, I don't think that was the prob with Darnold, his guys weren't routinely winning the battles out there.

When you mention him throwing on the move, this is what I a mean when I say he's got some Brock in his game, QB is often not in a textbook pocket, you have to move and throw on move, to be successful.

Kyle is a weirdo sometimes.^^
He´s a control freak that doesn´t like that his QB doesn´t see what he sees on the field and he f**king hates QB turnovers.
Well, good luck with Sam Darnold.

Oh by the way I don´t believe for one second the Niners offered the 12th pick in 2021 for Darnold. You think the Jets knowing they would draft Zach Wilson at 2 would have refused seriously?

Notice he cherry picks some random week in a year where Darnold was 92 rated QBing a dumpster fire
