interesting - Alex smith also had 14 fumbles that were TO (not including the fumble recoveries).
- Alex Smith turnovers first five seasons (pre harbaugh): 67
- Sam Darnold Turnovers first five seasons (Pre Kyle): 68

with the right coaching and system, Alex became super protective of the ball. Very interesting

FYI: the turnovers are counting fumbles lost and INT, not overall fumbles.

Good post tank. We see this stuff flip all the time. TOs are not constant throughout a players career. Geno was getting picked at a higher rate in NYJ than Sam. Put him in SEA with DK and Lockett and a probably HOF coach, and he's got an int percent that starts with a 1.. which is really good! Sam has already shown it, with a long stretch of zero INTs in camp, and keeping it clean in the preseason, that one was on Bell

Thanks! Obviously it doesn't mean Darnold won't continue his old ways but at least it's some comparable data to show that things can quickly change with the right change of scenery. Hopefully that's what happens.

to me, If Darnold wants the QB2 job - he needs to continue protecting the ball.

if Lance wants QB2, he needs to be less volatile with his quality of play.

that to me is the main difference between them right now. It's going to be fun to watch them here on Friday.

Yeah, creepin Up in us. It's funny cause I usually don't pay attention to the pre season games but they've been much more interesting this year cause the QB situation.

usually it's like a Bryan hoyer at two and god knows who at three and it's boring to watch

Darnold also needs to show he can go through progressions. Watching a David Carr breakdown of Purdy from the Seahawk playoff game he was doing that so well. I've yet to see Darnold do anything beyond scramble when first read isn't there.

Baldy talked about it in his interview. Wished Sam would've got past the first rush and reset and thrown to the open guys on his scrambles. Doesn't see the field well enough to do that unfortunately.

You just can't be productive on offense consistently if everything is predicated on the primary getting open every time.

TD to Cmac in the playoff game is a perfect example. Not a play Darnold makes at this point. Likely becomes a sack or a small scramble gain.

Funny thing about that game is Brock missed quite a few plays and still put up 330 and 4 total touchdowns.

I agree with the bolded. Hopefully darnold proves that he can go through his reads in the chargers game. I'll be paying attention to that.

brock actually missed his first option quite a few times. It sort of was an issue, only reason it wasn't really talked about is because he typically still found someone. The TD in the back of the endzone against the Raiders is a perfect example - I believe he had Jennings open on the slant and that was the first read, but he didn't throw it and had to scramble to make a play. It still worked, which is great, but it's not the type of execution of the plays that Kyle likes. He's talked about if the first reads are open, he wants them hit and his plays executed how he designed it. It's part of his play calling strategy.

i think that'll be the biggest improvement in Brocks game this year. Which should make us even more formidable.

Not sure Brock missed then as much as he was indecisive. Same issue Trey has right now. Those things can generally be corrected with experience.
