The Darnold move was very wise at the time it was made given Purdy's status. Reports that Purdy has returned to Florida to work on his technique provide more assurance that he will be ready by Week 1. That revitalizes the conversation about what to do with an "extra" QB on the roster. Do we really want to keep both Lance and Darnold or do we try to recoup draft capital by moving one of them? That convo will continue for a while.

I don't think it will be the convo. With three question marks at the position, I see us dressing all three, and taking advantage of our rule, which we got passed.
Jose Luis Sanchez just did a piece on this:

I would think we're just going to keep all three. I find it hard to believe there's a worthwhile trade package for either Lance or Darnold as the season gets closer, even if someone else's starter gets injured in camp etc. I guess if Darnold bombs in preseason activities they could flat out cut him without too much money lost, but that seems unlikely.

He was signed early day 1 of Free Agency which has to make us think. WHY?

KS & JL had this planned well in advance and not a spur of the moment thing.

They see something - for sure.

They did try and trade for Sam before moving up to #3. Wonder if the same folks would've been OK with them swinging for that fence

That particular fence is on a little league field though.

what's nice is swinging on Sam cost us exactly zero draft capital, you realize our big swing is competing with the guy who cost us no picks, on the chart, right?

Big swings > check swings

Albert Breer on the subject

"I think if Brock Purdy were unable to take the first snap of training camp, and that's certainly a possibility—he's on a track to play Week 1, but they're still building the strength in his arm back up—I think Sam Donald might take the first snap of training camp," Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently told Colin Cowherd. "Now, it doesn't mean Trey Lance can't come back and work his way forward, but I think that they feel like they've already given this guy a lot of chances."

They've already given this guy a lot of chances. Lol. Dude suffered a season ending injury in week 2 of his first opportunity. I don't think that's a lot of chances.

He could have won the job preseason year one. He could have impressed in his couple of opportunities when he played due to Jimmy's injury in his first season. He was given the starting job year two without competition and struggled through camp before suffering major injury early in the season. He has another opportunity now to play his way into the job.

Whether that's 'a lot' or not is subjective. I'm not sure how many more years a Super Bowl roster is expected to cater to the development of an individual player who *might* be good some time down the road. The time is now.

That was just an incredible throw.

What a nightmare that game was, lol.

Yeah and as far as "given a lot of chances" how about Darnold seriously?
FWIW, it seems that for the niners medias that went to the OTAs Lance and Darnold were at the same level essentially. So I don't understand all these national reporters that are "expecting" Darnold to take meaningful snaps this season. Did they watch the OTAs? Me I didn't, I'm just listening to guys that actually watch them and say that Lance and Darnold shared the first team reps and that we have to wait for training camp to have a true answer.
It's really weird this Darnold National vibe since he signed. Shanahan is great but he 's not a magician. He's not gonna transform completely Darnold in one offseason.
He's the same guy that was turnover prone and reckless at USC. In two or three years, maybe but now first year without knowing the offense?
If I have to guess, Purdy is the starter without a doubt and everyone is hoping he's ready week one. After that, training camp and maybe trade offers will decide.

I think they base it on us going out and getting him immediately. We wanted him.

Trey has one year under his belt in a cupcake situation, and that was 5 years ago lol. He's never done anything impressive. Just based on their careers (Darnold has not been great, i know) Darnold would be the safer bet.

We got reports from the local media (the only media that tries to give Trey a chance) in 2 practices in shorts. There's nothing to takeaway from that. With the pro Trey media watching they still had to say it was a tie. There was a day when Grant Cohn had to give them a tie, which means Darnold probably looked much better that day.

But still there's nothing to take from those 2 days. The national media is basing their opinions on their careers. Sam has at least proven to be a bad QB. At this point, Trey looks like he might struggle to stick as a backup in this league

I don't believe Albert is saying "given a lot of chances" based on more than his own thought or opinion, kind of just talking out of his ass. Darnold's been given a helluva lot more "a lot of chances" than Trey. His comment is probably just a flippant remark. It just sounds like someone trying to manufacture controversy for lack of absolutely nothing to generate clicks right now.

I think he's giving his honest opinion, and yes it's all opinion at this point. Put on the Darnold tape, he's got a live arm, and can move around and make plays. It's a question on is he a dud, or is he a stud who has been in bad situations with failed HC and talent poor teams. KS betting on the latter, as are many of these experts.
