I don't really agree with you on this one. You don't know if Trey and hell even Sam can't be the long term starter here. If one or the other is playing extremely well then why would we pull them when Brock is healthy? The sample size for Brock isn't all that big as well, his play can easily go in the opposite direction now that teams got some film on him. We've all seen many QBs over the years have a hot start to their careers only to fall off and they never regain that consistency they once had. I love Brock, but 8 games isn't enough for me to crown him our FQB and I also love Trey with 4 games not being enough for me too think he can't be our long term guy like the team initially had planned. All I'll do is sit back and watch and save my definitive thoughts until they are clearly defined as to our QB of the future.
I agree with you and covered this in my post. I said Trey 'may not get' extended playing time because we have another option, and also said a door could open for him or Darnold if they are playing extremely well (while we wait for Purdy to return).
Regardless, the point is one or the other (Trey or Sam) would have to be playing very well immediately for this to happen, or Brock would have to regress to a level that makes one or the other the better option immediately. The emphasis would be on what they are capable of doing right away, not who would be the better option to develop over extended play time.
I'll put it another way: If this team was in a rebuild or transition period, and Trey and Sam were the top two QBs on the depth chart, there is pretty much no circumstance where I wouldn't want to give Trey the extended playing time he needs to see what he could become long term.
Given that our team is in a Super Bowl window, and we have a QB on the roster who was playing fantastic and still has room for improvement, the calculus is different. We just need the best quality play we can get at the position until that guy returns (and then we'll see how he responds to the injury). If something develops in the meantime with the other two guys, we'll be better for it. It's not unreasonable to think that Sam could be a better option than Trey to win a game, or a handful of games, in the short term, despite being a less appealing developmental option.
