For one, I wouldn't have made the trade of moving up from 12 to 3, knowing what was at the top of the draft. IMO, it was risky as hell to move up that high in 2021. Jacksonville was dead set on draft Trevor Lawrence at #1 overall and that would've been the only trade up I would've made. There was just so many options for the 9ers at 12, they really didn't need to be all in on a QB that year.

What's done is done, I'd trade Trey Lance for what I could and focus on Purdy. Spend more money and draft picks on the O-line then maybe in 2025 depending on what Purdy looks like, I'd draft another QB.

The entire process is a crapshoot, but I would never get mad at swinging for the fences looking for the franchise QB. I'm just left bewildered how fast he is old news? To me its not like he's proven he is a bust yet.

Also, this regime is very what I would call emotional/impulsive responsive. A big reason why they traded up then was Kyle and co finally knew Jimmy G was not the guy and had to get someone else for the next season in case he went down again.

So far this year we know we lost 4qb's last year. Now he has 4 qb's getting tons of reps all over. Feels like the status quo response to something recently experienced again. Maybe this works out better though?

I'm curious if Lance looks good in the preseason, would they trade him? I would say hell no, but I am not them.

I doubt they would trade him at this point. If you trade him he instantly hurts the cap in dead money so you would need to get something worth enough value that it absorbs his dead money+the new guys contracts as well.

Financially it makes more sense to keep him. Prior to the draft he could have been flipped for picks on cheap contracts and eaten them dead money but now I doubt there's enough value players out there to warrant their contract+lances dead money.

Impressed how he stacks up one good practice after another, even when he only gets Receivers like Bell or Gray out there.
Too bad he does not get a fair chance to compete for QB1.
It feels like Purdy was handed QB1 without a competition.
Take away CMC from the team last year and the numbers would be much more telling....

Give them an equal chance an assessment for gods sake so the 49ers make the best decision for their future based on actual evidence on equal circumstances.

All I want is for Lance a chance to compete for QB1. It does seem like Purdy is handed the job and yeah he went undefeated. So since he's so good there should be no problem competing with the guy you moved up for in the draft. Lance is doing well with the backups and he would probably do better practicing with the ones. It's just seems so reactionary to anoint Purdy as the guy with no need to have the two compete at all.

I am right there with you, but i do see this a bit diffrent.

I would not have traded up, To me it was Alex Smith all over again.... The big difference, I was positive Nolan was going to fail, and i personally give Shanny 2.0 the benifit of the doub.

I probably would have taken Mac Jones at 12, i like the dude as a prospect....here is were it goes off the rails tho... I can't stand Mac Jones.

I really dislike the dudes attitude. I am a blue collar, lets get the job done kind of guy. Mac Jones is a lie to your face, and go around your back snake. I am so glad he is not a 49er.

I would 2000% much rather cheer on Trey Lance and his progression.

At this point, the 49ers dont get back what they spent on him, its better to continue to work on him in the hopes he shows the team what they saw in him, and take whatever draft capital he is worth when he leaves.

Trading him for some random low draft pick, and taking the bad press for a failed development is probably worse, then taking the compensation pick, and being able to say we tried for the entire 5 years to make it work....or who knows...maybe the dude goes in this year and lights it up and is a success story.....the upside still is better then the cut and run alternative.

Purdy gives me Jimmy-Vibes who 1) did not get it done and 2) we got rid of and traded 3 1sts to get "something different".

We all know Shanny loved Jimmy, so i am afraid we miss out on Lance while handing it over to purdy who was riding a wave that CMC was the main part of.
Why not let them compete with equal chances and get the best for the 49ers?

Well just focus on the physical talent. Pretty similar there.

Let's see some plays where Trey is in the pocket and successfully goes through progressions and hits a checkdown.

I think Purdy's pocket presence is way better than Jimmy's ever was, and add in Purdy's athleticism as well

I def agree with the pocket presence, but that's a mental trait. I agree Purdy has short area quickness that Jimmy lacks.

My main point is that people who can't see Brock excelling beyond a Jimmy level player are hung up on physical traits instead of the more important qualities great QBs share.
