Los Angeles Chargers QB Trey Lance Thread

Yet the reverse is clearly also true. Those excuses were bandied about for Jimmy all throughout the years but suddenly now they are just excuses for Trey.

But as genus said the reality is an 8 year vet should not have the same standard as rookies in their first few starts. Hell Brock shouldn't even be held to the same standard as Jimmy was until he gets at least a year of starts under his belt. If either Brock or Trey are still making the same bonehead mistakes after 30+ starts then everyone should blast them too.

Let's just concentrate on the two losses where the team only scored 10 points in.

@ Arizona -
7 penalties for 60 yards
1-5 on 4th down
Drops, batted down passes on key downs and of course Trey getting stopped at the goalline.

@Chicago
12 penalties for 99 yards
0-2 on 4th down
We know the conditions in that game as well as Deebo's fumble in the redzone.

Do you think if the team added Kittle and CMC to those games they could've scored more points? These are the questions that should be asked.

21 year old rookie vs 8 year NFL vet.

You guys think you're doing something but that something is making yourselves look foolish.

Absolutely no trust in his QB but maybe one of those downs was the throw to Aiyuk in the dirt so I cant blame his lack of trust really.

Ok now go look at the threads from his first few games...hell go look at the vikings game thread since that was the first loss and bad game he had here. Did you see the same type of negative reaction? Or did people give him time to show his pros/cons and make statements based of a track record?

That wasn't the discussion. We were simply saying that many people put their hate of Jimmy ahead of the Niners' success. And many came in here to gloat after a tough loss.
Not a single one of those quotes is anyone saying boy im happy 9ers lost. Being conditioned to Jimmy disappointing is far different than wanting it to happen.

Our point was people were gloating about it, THE DAY OF THE GAME and right after the loss. It's not that hard to understand. Moving on.

That's not a fair analysis of those posts. What is there to do after a loss? Nothing we say would change the game so obviously it brings out the worst in us.

I doubt any of the people you quoted were rooting for us to lose but we lost...so they took their shots and tried to pass blame on the easiest target to them.

If it helps, Alex Smith played golf in CA last week. Maybe we can drum up some decades old anger there?

i know I've said many times I didn't expect Lance to get traded, if he does, until sometime in camp when they know what darnold looks like and how Brock is.

I never said he's terrible and can't improve. Lol once again. You just keep saying stuff that I've never said.

if you want to be taken seriously, at least accuse specific people of things they've said. Lol you can't wrap up 20 guys random opinions and bunch everyone together. Lmao

Lance won't beat out Purdy. It just won't happen. Lance didn't even look good enough in minicamp to outshine darnold for Christ sake. But don't trip, he's going to be a superstar this year.

everyone knows he can get better, especially cause he's been bad - hence the trade value and how the team feels about him, that isn't in question. Just not everyone thinks he is going to be some superstar and never has. I was optimistic but it was never something I really felt like would happen.

If he ends up playing, good, I'll root for him. If he can beat out Brock, great, even better. Those are BIG it's. I wouldn't get your life on it.

im just tired of waiting around for two years of this guy to get ANY glimmer of or showing that he can be special. Especially now that we have a young kid who just did special things. The only knock is he got injured on a freak play, one that's more unlikely than what happened to Lance. Outside of that play, he's never missed a game career wise. I don't see what the injury concern is. Lance hasn't managed to stay healthy for two years straight, he's the one I'm worried that will get reinjured

I don't have the time to match up posters to things. You know I'm not making up anything that I said. If it doesn't apply to you then don't worry about it.

And if you don't want to be lumped in with the extreme Trey bashers then don't join in with drama filled responses like claiming anyone said if Lance doesn't have all pros all around him it means he is on a terrible team.

Or make comments like the bolded above. This is the difference between you and me. I don't like to play with hypotheticals. I want to see how things play out before I make a judgement call.

I wasn't out on Jimmy until he proved his limitations time and time again and even then I wasn't eager to push him aside. Brock played great last year, I'm excited to see him come back fully healthy BUT we have seen a similar situation before with Jimmy. He looked amazing in 2017, went 5-0 and looked like we found our franchise QB. He then got hurt and suddenly we started seeing his limitations show up.

If you look at my posts here you will not find me bashing Brock in the least bit. I simply want the team to make a proper evaluation of the guys they have because getting it right is absolutely critical to our success as a franchise.

Facts are Brock is recovering from a serious injury to his throwing arm, an injury we haven' seen often to understand the recovery process very well. Am I going to put money on Trey winning QB1? No. Do I want to see an actual competition? Yes.

This is the simple fact you and others simply refuse to acknowledge for some reason. We have no idea how Brock will look after his injury. We don't have a great idea how Lance will look with the work he's put in this offseason or even how Darnold will look as he works to learn the offense.

Shanahan said the competition doesn't start til training camp. Thankfully we get media access to each practice and many are open to the public for "non biased" opinions. We will see soon enough where the guys stand.

EVERY 49ers fan should want a legit competition.

What does Trey have to accomplish in training camp and preseason for him to overtake Purdy? Can he overtake Purdy based on training camp and preseason alone? If not, should the 49ers be cautious with Purdy and hold him out for the first few games even if he is technically able to return so that Trey can start and play with the players you reference so there is an apples to apples comparison? If so, how many games should Trey get and what does he have to show to take Purdy's job?

These are real questions. I am not a Trey hater. I am just trying to understand what it will take for Trey to overtake Purdy.

I'd say it starts with demonstrating he's a better option than Darnold first.

In the end there may not be anything Trey can do to overtake Brock because end of the post season play > regular season play > joint practice > training camp > preseason.

But to answer your question I think if Trey comes in shows full command of the offense, consistent good decision making, accuracy and mobility while Brock comes out rusty it MAY sway the team to start him.

Realistically I think Trey's best chance to start week 1 is doing those things but Brock not being physically ready or the team being cautious with him because Trey shows big improvement in camp.

End of the day I think Brock's injury threw a curve ball into a proper competition. We'll see when Brock is able to join the competition and we'll see if Trey or Sam do enough to change anything. But everyone should want to see all QBs healthy so they could show their best and let the best guy play and hopefully stay healthy.

What if Darnold "The greatest thrower of the football the 49ers have ever seen" demonstrates he's a better option than Purdy?

Or is that not possible in your book?

Brock would have to fall flat on his face during camp for Trey to overtake him this offseason, provided both are healthy. The game film that Brock put down in 2022 is more than anything Lance can do during training camp or preseason. The team should be very patient with Brock - he's a young buck and has lots of time. Absolutely no need to rush him back.
