Also, being critical is fine when its warranted too. But lets point out the facts about the Bears game which people are forming their opinions on Trey from:
-It was raining
-No George Kittle
-Elijah Mitchell got hurt early on (obviously no CMC)
-Three first year starters on the OL making their first starts
So now I ask you.....how fair is it to really criticize Trey Lance for this game given those circumstances? That is why people call criticism of Lance "hate" because logic should tell you he should get a bit of a pass for that game.
I was excited to see the kid play to be honest. Like every other 49er fan I was disappointed by the results in Chicago, but chalk that up to Game 1 jitters. Chalk it up to a road start. Chalk it up to the weather or a whole host of other factors.
It took a full season before the greatest 49er QB of all time, Joe Montana, became the GOAT. He played some absolutely HORRIFIC games in that 1980 season. He also had a few "lights out" performances that told me he was going to be good. But that was just a few. There were other games where he looked positively lost. Positively awful. Positively "not the guy."
Trey's biggest problem is none other than Brock Purdy. Because the moment that kid stepped on the field he was LIGHTS OUT. He didn't turn out a stinker of a performance. He was great from the word GO. The only think that stopped him was a torn up elbow. And, you know what? NOT HIS FAULT! So, I personally believe Trey will get another shot next season. I don't think Brock will be 100-percent ready to go by the first game.
Unfortunately, for Trey at least, the moment he throws an interception, or loses a fumble, or turns in a less than stellar game, fans on the Webzone are going to be screaming for Purdy. He's just a kid. But he casts a darn big shadow now.
