Really? That seems very extreme to me. Lets see how Trey starts off the 1st half of the season before we start making assumptions about what Kyle thinks of Trey. Lets see how Kyle responds to Trey's first poor game, at least, before we start trying to draw any conclusions.

You don't keep Jimmy if you believe Trey is ready... even if Kyle does believe in Trey you have to feel bad for Trey. He will be under constant fire by the media and fan for everything he does. He struggles and the locker room is divided. This is how you ruin a young QB

b******t, you keep Jimmy if you feel better about Jimmy being the backup over Sudfield or Purdy. Which I am %100 down with. All the guys reading this as some nonsense about doubting Trey are just being drama queens. Anyone who knows basic football should be f**king thrilled to have the best backup in the league instead of two complete unknowns. This is great news for the team, only partisan emotions and lack of reason could make you think otherwise. Just watch who tries to spin this into something it isn't. It will expose agendas.

Having the " best back up in the league" means nothing because hopefully he is not the bench the entire season. The problem is with young QBs, do want to bring that kind of drama into the mix.

We don't know if Lance might let the noise affect him. This is his first year starting. Last year was little to no pressure. Lance is a youngster that grew up with social media. I don't know if, or how harsh fan/media criticism will affect him.

No one would clamor for Sudfeld starting if Lance poops the bed. With Jimmy on board and with his past success on the team, it's on if Lance struggles, and he will struggle.

Trey claimed that outside noise doesn't affect him, do you doubt his word? I think this is a great development for both Trey and the team. Jimmy will help the kid prepare, and the team has one of, if not the best backup in the league if Trey gets hurt. It's a win-win, other than the media stupidity that is sure to ensue. I think Trey is too mature to get his feeling hurt because Jimmy is still around as a backup. Give the guy some credit for being a man.

Sounds good. As for Lance saying outside noise doesn't affect him, what's he supposed to say? He does carry himself well and appears confident in himself. It'll be put to the test this season.

And we will find out what he is made of.

How long before the fans turn on him?

First game he struggles.

This. Which is why I don't think keeping Jimmy on the roster is a good idea.

Lance will struggle, multiple games this season, I'm guessing. And after each of these games, the question will be, "are you considering a QB change?". Kyle brought this upon himself.

I think the #1 thing we can count on is Shanahan not making a decision based on public opinion.

It's not that media/public will sway his opinion, it's that the noise around the team will be different. After Lance struggles for a game, the narrative won't be "let's see if Lance improves next week", it will be, "time to put Jimmy in". Kyle won't react to that noise, Lance might by pressing too hard next game. "Better not f**k up, better not f**k up" before every snap. Maybe he's mentally tough enough and it won't matter. Maybe it's added difficulty to his plate.

If Trey cannot handle the immense pressure that the media puts on players than he'll never be able to handle the immense pressure of winning a championship.

I get what you're saying but why add more pressure. Maybe he does better with this pressure of possibly being replaced if he struggles for any string of games. I don't think it's an ideal situation for a young QB trying to establish himself.

Why? Because who gives a f**k what the media thinks? Inspite of Jimmy's physical limitations and lack of durability, he is an encyclopedia of knowledge that is Shanahan's system and by all accounts, Trey's friend and mentor.

If we are to believe Trey though, he only cares what his coaches and team mates think. He doesn't care what anyone in the media thinks. No way Kyle made this decision without reassuring Trey that this is his team. Kyle will not be quick to make a change. Kyle knows that Trey will have his ups and downs and that Jimmy will continue to mentor him.

I'm not worried about Kyle putting Jimmy in to replace Lance as much as I was wondering how Lance will handle public pressure once he struggles in a game and fans want Jimmy to take over.
I have no idea if Lance is on social media, and if he is, whether he cares. But having Jimmy on the team introduces that possibility. In the end, this won't make or break Lance. It's not like if Lance's career falters, I'm going to point the finger at his inability to handle social media. And who knows, maybe he struggles, handles the added social media pressure, and it ends up making him mentally stronger.
Tr_EXCUSES better put up or shut up! He's on the clock. No losses or interceptions or bad play. Jimmy G can make the NFC Championship or Super Bowl. He's watching very closely right behind him. He better get it done.

I'm sure Shanahan and Lynch discussed this with Trey Lance and the leaders of the team to make sure that everyone is onboard.

The team last year proved their maturity and focus in avoiding a QB controversy when Jimmy went down in week 17 and Trey looked good against Houston, if such a scenario happened in which Trey had an up & down season and went down for a game or two due to injury, they'd stick with the prior status quo and not cause a QB controversy.

For all my lambasting of Jimmy G, I felt cutting him this late in the offseason would have been a d%#k move, it's something you do early to allow him to start elsewhere. He did contribute to the team becoming a contender after all.

And he's shown that he will put the team first, as best exemplified during the Detroit game and this clip of him cheering the Trey and Deebo 4th down completion.

No one would have begrudged him for sitting on the bench given that he was injured, yet, there he was standing on the sideline potentially cheering on the beginning of the Trey era.

The team will be more than fine, they're going to be great because of their talent and character.

The quest for 6 can't come soon enough!

Maybe we'll finally get to see that rotating QB offense we saw in the preseason last year, except this time they'll only rotate after each QB has a negative play.
I apologize for my initial upset post. The original notification I got on my phone was that they renegotiated his contract for 16mil.... then I found out it was 6mil and that changed my tune. I like the signing and no longer think that this is an indication of the 49ers faith in Trey....
Tr_EXCUSES better not falter now. He will be pulled quickly.

Has anyone ever tried a split QB formation?
