First game he struggles.

This. Which is why I don't think keeping Jimmy on the roster is a good idea.

Lance will struggle, multiple games this season, I'm guessing. And after each of these games, the question will be, "are you considering a QB change?". Kyle brought this upon himself.

The real question is whether Lance will still be the starter after his ordinary performance in the pre-season?

I think the #1 thing we can count on is Shanahan not making a decision based on public opinion.

He knows its coming. Kyle isn't stupid.

It's not that media/public will sway his opinion, it's that the noise around the team will be different. After Lance struggles for a game, the narrative won't be "let's see if Lance improves next week", it will be, "time to put Jimmy in". Kyle won't react to that noise, Lance might by pressing too hard next game. "Better not f**k up, better not f**k up" before every snap. Maybe he's mentally tough enough and it won't matter. Maybe it's added difficulty to his plate.

You do if you can't bring yourself to lose him for nothing.

I can see that but they need to make it clear Trey is starter. Still creates a mess for Trey. I can just hear the "we want Garoppolo" chants like the "We want Carr" chants

Like I said this how you ruin a young QB.

Please dont tell me that you think the chants were what "ruined" Alex Smith.

First of all, he was never ruined. He had a decent post 49er career so he wasnt ruined. Secondly, the comparison to this Alex Smith situation is absurd. Trey isnt a 6 year NFL veteran making rookie mistakes. That alone makes the comparison ridiculous.

Smith had an outstanding post 49ers career where Kap had no career. Proves Smith was the better QB and the 49ers should never have dumped him

If Trey cannot handle the immense pressure that the media puts on players than he'll never be able to handle the immense pressure of winning a championship.

I get what you're saying but why add more pressure. Maybe he does better with this pressure of possibly being replaced if he struggles for any string of games. I don't think it's an ideal situation for a young QB trying to establish himself.

Anyone who is "ruined" by some booing is weak minded and not cut out to play in the league.

Alex Smith is mentally tough obviously. That was just 1 of 1,000,000 excuses his fans made up to justify his mediocrity.

He had a better post 49ers career because he went to a legit offensive mind. Something he never had in SF.

Probably, but this is not a good comparison because Kap never were given an opportunity in the post 49ers career due to politics.
I mean at least this season isn't over if Trey gets injured

At least we know Jimmy G is an excellent teammate. We know he won't try to undermine Lance in the Locker room.

Also, one of Kyle's the biggest strength as a HC outside of offensive scheming is his ability to build a positive locker room environment and build team morale.

Base on these two points, I don't think there will be any issues in the locker room.

Now I do understand the media will not be nice to Trey. That part of the concern I understand and get. However, I would say the locker room is much more important than the media.

Alex Smith wasn't nearly ruined by the fan chants, but by a revolving door at offensive coordinator, and two Head Coaches that threw him under the bus.

From Trey's standpoint, the 49ers have brought him along very patiently. Some might make argument that he should've been starting in 2021 to get reps, but being able to redshirt for a year and watch a veteran QB in Garoppolo week in and week out... plus having one of the league's best rosters as your surrounding cast... He's not being thrown to the wolves like so many young QB's.

If Trey fails, it's not going to be because the 49ers failed him.

The 49ers locker room is actually a very good locker room. I've noticed that Shanahan-coached teams are much stronger at the end of the year than they are at the beginning. Why? Because the 49er players are grinders. They're constantly working hard, week in and week out, in practice, just trying to get better.

From what I hear about Trey, he's of that same mold. The team will be fine, so long as they don't start the year TOO slow.

Doesnt prove either of these things, but thats for another thread.
