If that's the floor with Lance then he has to start moving forward.

Nonsense. He has only a couple of fumbles this year and two intercepts. One of the fumbles was from Mak snapping it badly.

I rewatched the game. Trey had 9 designed runs(ie not option plays or scrambles).

That's a f**king ton for a QB regardless of rookie or not. I was very surprised by this. I thought Kyle would dial up maybe 1, 2 or even 3, but 9?!!

Wow... was it that many? How did you count the goal line stand play where he got stuffed at the 1ft line? I consider this to be an option because there was clearly a pass option to the RB but he decided to try and run it in.

I think a couple of those holding penalties were really on Trey. If the lineman didn't hold, Trey would have been licked. He needs to be more patient in the pocket and stop escaping as soon as he sees his first read isn't open. He is young and inexperienced. There were definitely some positives that can be taken from this game as well. He definitely has a lot of upside but he also has a lot of learning to do.

The holding penalties were more of a result of the offense just not being used to playing with Lance and vice versa. So you could say neither Lance or the offensive line is to blame or both share the blame.

Mobility is going to be part of Lance's game and if we want to see more explosive plays those just take time to develop. A big reason you want a guy like Lance is you want him to escape to buy time and hit an explosive play or run for a chunk yardage when nothing is open.

Now not saying he doesn't have work to do as a pocket passer but it's just going to be different with Lance at QB than it is with Jimmy and it'll take some time for everybody to get used to each other especially when they've hardly had any reps together.

It is a bit more then that. He has to get to know the playbook so it is automatic when he executes. He also needs to be able to predict and read defenses. That takes more than a couple of weeks to do. He also needs to calm down and stop going for the run if he doesn't get his first read open. If not he will just be too predictable. I was guessing he would run today just by watching his first read. If I can and I am no football genius, what do you think the opposition defense will do?

He needs a year sitting behind JG, or even more, before he is up to speed. I think he is a better back up so far than Breathart and Nick Mullens. He is not ready to start yet.

That is not what Kyle wants. He wants a QB that will exhaust the play from the pocket first before looking to escape. I guess you're correct in the fact that the 5 yard sacks would have been slightly better than the 10 yard holding penalties. Over the past two weeks Trey has left the pocket on more than a few occassions even when it was clean and protection was holding up.

He was not helped by Kyle in this game I thought. I really don´t understand why Kyle keeps calling run plays for Lance with empty backfield. It´s so obvious for the defense. I don´t get also why you wouldn´t play him more under center and set up the play action with the running game. That´s the thing in North Dakota State that made him a good fit for Kyle´s offense in the first place.
That being said, for a 21 years old rookie, I thought that Trey Lance was pretty good. You can definetely see the potential. He´s a playmaker. The interception was bad but the fact that it didn´t break him mentally at all was a really good sign.
He has a lot to work obviously but he feels like the kind of player that will improve game after game. I trust that Kyle will find pretty soon the right way to use him.
I would still have Garoppolo as the starter for the rest of the year. I prefer having Lance watching on the sidelines. For me the offense is still better with Jimmy G and they have to protect Trey honestly. But we´ll see what Kyle thinks.

The whole Josh Allen comparison with Trey Lance I really do not see at all. They are quite a bit different in my opinion. Josh's arm is much stronger and his release is much quicker. For running styles, Josh is much more physical and bigger where Lance is more agile and quick. Both have/had accuracy issues coming out of college but that's about all I see for similarities.

I think a QB Lance reminds me of is Jalen Hurts.

Treys first start was better than ALL the rookie qbs first start by a decent amount. With little to no pass protection and no mostert or Kittle that is very very impressive. Time to give credit where credit is due.

Yeah, he didn't get much help. With receivers dropping passes and the OL constantly getting flagged for holding.

shameful post

Lance proved today why he should sit for the next 2 years

The OL didn't help him today - he was constantly having to tuck the ball and run.

Same Oline Jimmy had but he still did better with that then Trey

Jimmy would have been sacked 10 times if he had played today.

I disagree. I believe Jimmy would have been sacked today yes, however he would have also hit the check down most the time also resulting in positive yards.

As I stated before, I was exaggerating on the 10 sacks. Still, Jimmy would have gone down a couple of times, even with that quick release.

That's right. jimmy slides forward in the pocket which is what the oline is used to. He would have been sacked one more time but also completed 3-4 more.

Any opinion on the batted balls?
His pick in the 1st qtr was ugly.

His tight throw to Aiyuk in the 2nd was pretty though....

Trey lance kept us in this game, and he's the reason we lost the game.

Bad goal line execution, the pic, and generally his improv style took the edge off our rhythm and confused offensive personnel as much as defensive personnel.

Nothing new here. It's been stated for a while. Jimmy gives us a better chance of winning.

I also agree with everyone that Trey gave us a lot to like from a 21 year old with 300 snaps to his credit in 1-aa ball.

I just think the original trajectory for him is about right, and this will turn into an oooh aah woulda coulda shoulda season if he's our starter this year.

My main fear if he starts this season is kyle's homocidal game plan which turned trey into our #1 back.

I was frankly shocked.

Rhythm? LOL what? there was no rhythm...how many penalties did they get yesterday? Rhythm goes out the window when it's 1 & 15/20 or 2nd in long and damn day.

The "advantage" of Jimmy giving them the best chance to win, doesn't outweigh the development needed for this kid to be good in the long-term...this is NOT a SB roster, hate to break it to everyone...Jimmy is NOT a pro-bowl caliber QB that makes everyone around him better. SF going on to win like 8 games because he's the starter doesn't do s**t for this team this yr or in 2022.

We all know Jimmy will start when he's healthy and it's gonna mean just about nothing...he's a lame duck QB that won't be on this team next yr. It's almost pointless to play him AND If he get's seriously injured they're on the hook for an extra $7.5M in 2022.

The amount of holding calls was ridiculous. I'm still not sure how they called that one on Dwelley.

I've never seen such a thing....I had to change the channel at one point because I was about to lose it.
