LOL. I don't know about flamboyant but he is super eccentric and certainly isn't afraid to put himself out there on the regular.

My original take when we drafted him was that he'd take Taylor's job. I thought he could be a faster, more dynamic slot weapon for Kyle with dynamic return abilities.

This breakdown seems to validate that in year 1 at least.

Concerns: struggles outside the numbers esp. at the X, alligator arms (fearful near potential contact), limited deep ball experience and success, poor at contested catches, no deep speed threat (unlike Goodwin at the X), wins right away at the LOS or doesn't win at all, scouts say: he lacks an alpha personality (we already talked about this so no need to readdress) and must add muscle and play strength to his frame and physical corners can have their way with him on line of scrimmage, veteran CB's watch his hips and aren't shaken, needs to be regularly challenged?, etc.

Pettis admits that his interests, which include art and literature may be different than what most are used to and thought that may have had an impact in some team's decisions:

"I'm not shy about what I like outside of football, and so, a lot of people take that as like, "Oh maybe he's not bought into football all the way." They'll kind of try to get that out of me, like, "how committed to football is he?" and all of that. So I think that's the biggest thing they are trying to get. I don't know, I would say that what I wanted to get across worked."

Obviously, teams want to be sure that any prospect is sold on making football their life and career for the next few years. Pettis was quick to point out that his outside interests do not affect his love of the game.

Strengths: natural feel for space and creating it, excellent shake, excellent at creating space in a phone booth esp. near the goal line, soft hands, strong YAC ability and knows how to get into the EZ, was the NCAA record holder for punt return TD's, vision, elusive/slippery, can detach upper body from lower body, cerebral player, versatile route runner, etc.


Does anyone have any video counters and breakdowns on his splits between the slot and X? I know it's a small sample size with us. It looks like he's going to be the starting X going forward but he seems far more comfortable inside the numbers esp. from the slot off the LOS (vs. outside and using the sidelines). But Kyle has so many options at slot now, I'm unsure how much he'd actually be used there going forward. What does he need to work on to grow into a more comfortable X?

And frankly, just by me proving a point on some of the deficiencies that Pettis has as a receiver is depressing as a Niner fan to point out anyway. So why bother. I've been critical. Hope he improves this season

Per the breakdown, alligator-arming and fear of contact drops, contested catches, struggled more outside the numbers than inside, if he doesn't win initially he won't win at all, outmuscled by press CB's who are more technical in watching his hips vs. his shake moves, gives up some later in routes, run blocking, etc. All these concerns I'm sure will be worked on and refined but much is mentality/will IMHO. Long list of good too.

I was asking Ensatsu. I'm familiar with Cohn's diatribes when it comes to Pettis.
