Andy Lee wasn't even Andy Lee to start his career. It wasn't until his 4th year where he busted out as a top quality punter.

Pinion has been progressing every single year just like Lee did. I see no real issues with him. Pinion ranked near the top of the league in touchbacks, punts within the 20 and return yards. Having him handle kickoffs is a huge plus that has allowed the 49ers to get away with using aging kickers. Phil Dawson left, went to Arizona where he had to take on kickoff duty and he was all over the place for much of the season, something that Jay Feely blamed on the toll that kicking off takes on you.

If King was just a typical punter that'd be one thing but the guy is his own traveling one man circus. I just don't expect Lynch or Shanahan to have any interest.

The aftermath was a problem. King threw a football at Denver fullback Andy Janovich and connected, an action that drew a personal foul penalty.

It cost the Raiders 15 yards. It'll also hit King in the pocketbook. The NFL fined King $9,115 for unsportsmanlike conduct, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area.

The flag is King's fourth in the past two seasons. He is the only punter to incur a personal foul penalty in that span.

Can you imagine the webzone if he got a foul called and it put the opposing team in a position to score? We do not need a clown for a punter.

I think we should put his penalties in context of overall play.

Over his career King averages 7.5 yards lost per year due to the penalties we're talking about.

Taking both King and Pinion's career averages and an average number of punts in a season (75 or so), Marquette King provides an extra 14.5 yards per game in field position over Bradley Pinion.

Once we penalize him for his unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in this average field position per game, Marquette King provides an extra 14.1 yards per game in field position over Bradley Pinion.

So, if you want to make a big deal out of his unsportsmanlike penalties, that's the math on the complaint your making: King is only 14.1 yards per game better than Pinion instead of 14.5 yards per game better than Pinion.

EDIT: The other way to think about this is that if Marquette King got an unsportsmanlike penalty every single game he'd be more or less the equivalent of Bradley Pinion (an extra 14.5 yards of kicking efficiency minus 15 yards for our imaginary penalty every game).

Pinion's Net Avg is 41.3 Yards....Kings Net Avg is 42.7 for 2017

That's a difference of 1.4 Yards per punt more in favor of King

Yeah, I went with avg instead of net average, but to be fair there's not really a right way to do it.

The good thing about net average is it penalizes for touchbacks, but the bad thing about net average is outside of the case of touchbacks it's measuring special teams coverage more than it's measuring punter ability.

Straight average is at least isolating out what the punter is doing from the rest of the unit.

If I had my druthers we'd have two advanced punting stats (and maybe we do and I just haven't seen them):

1) A statistic that measures punts that land outside the 20 which incorporates both distance and hang time (someone would have to figure out the formula as based on how much each one matters for return yards).

2) A separate statistic for average opponent starting position for punts inside the 20 for which a touchback = 20.

Heard Gruden didn't like him. Del rio was getting sick of him. You just don't want your punter being a douche. It's simple. Plus their cap situation is kinda f**ked and they need to make all the space that they can.

So his two head coaches didn't like him. There's your answer. Pinion is fine for us.
