Here were the two plays that I think are examples as to why Jimmy did not run any playaction, situations Kyle may have wanted to avoid. Few things to keep in mind, the two teams have scrimmaged very recently, DEN runs a similar offense, Fangio may have told his defenders "don't fall for that".

I know there's little gameplanning in the preseason, but after seeing so many bootlegs in practice, DEN defenders aren't likely to keep falling for it, and may be looking for it. Every single Jimmy pass came out of shotgun. That's a coach being ultra protective.

Good point...i think i'd be a little more nervous if he looked like that without the two days of practice against that D and the fact that they run a similar offense and their OC was Jimmy's QB coach with the 49ers prior to this season.

Would've been interesting to see what happens if we didn't have the two passes batted down either. Certainly would've made for a less cringeworthy stat line but it happens.

Learn your hard lessons in games that don't matter or practice and avoid them in games that matter.

This

What about his footwork? Half his throws, he didn't have any space to step into because the blitzer was hitting him.

Looked slow, not on the balls of his feet, not stepping up into a pocket. Things like that. I think it's probably a non factor though just like his stat line last night.

I'm all for criticizing when it's warranted but was there really much of a pocket to step up into? I certainly don't want him making that near pick 6 type of throw if he can't laser it in there(would actually prefer he see the DB in the area and throw the ball away).

i think he couldve slide around. he looked very stiff regardless
What happened last night with JG was the best early Christmas gift a lot of people in here could've gotten. 3 drives in one pre-season game proved 11 months of negativity correct

The OL and Jimmy's performance are concerning. On the bright side, I have a really good feeling about the defense this year.

Hopefully, with a strong defense and a run first offense, we can stay competitive for the first 4 to 8 games. Maybe by that time Jimmy is rounding into form and looks like he did at the end of 2017.

So far who is winning the trade (2nd round pick) for JG, us or the Pats?

?

Not an easy question to answer but I'd say the 49ers
https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/patriots-complicated-haul-jimmy-garoppolo-trade-still-growing

Meh, they should have just drafted a player with that 2nd rounder. This is what they got with that 2nd rounder:

In total, New England made 10 moves that involved at least one asset originating from the Garoppolo trade, netting six players:

CB Duke Dawson
LB Christian Sam
CB Joejuan Williams
RB Damien Harris
T Yodny Cajuste
QB Jarrett Stidham

Oh, and the book still isn't closed on this trade, as the Patriots have the Bears' fourth-rounder in next year's draft.

Meh.

I think Belichick didn't want to have a straight on comparison between Jimmy G and Player B. Although Stidham and Harris have looked good in preseason. I liked Williams and Cajuste in college. But I'd still say the 49ers won the trade we have seen what Jimmy can do when healthy and he's a difference maker.

What have we seen and what has he done?

This is how I see it. Having Coleman Brieda and Mostert running the ball and a much much better defense will keep us in games.

C'mon man, that's the most hater comment ever. No coach has ever actually believed that. Many will be confident in their chess game abilities but they still know it's all about execution by the players on the field. That's why Walsh, Holmgren and Shanny sr were absolute sticklers about every last detail of every play. Because for things to work later, they have to work now. When that happens, it's unstoppable. But they never expect themselves to just, "wow" everybody.

Also, what have teams done to, "adjust" to Kyle's system? For real? I want to know. You guys act like this was an actual game with a game-plan and scripted plays. It wasn't. We didn't even see Jimmy run a bootleg slide concept which is a staple of this offense. It looked like we ran 2 of the oldest concepts in the game just to get some simple reads going. We ran a couple china concepts and a slant/flat. I couldn't see what the other batted pass was, but it wasn't like we were running the kinds of plays Shanny is so great at. Why show that stuff in pre-season? No point. You can work on it in practice just as easily.
you are right. there is no fancy dancy adjustment to kyles so called system... the other teams defense just does a pass rush and we fold. if you are not concerned about our pass protection. you are just whistling past the end zone my friend. and yes,, last year we saw teams do the adjustments and we come out stumbling in the second half of games. as if we are stunned other teams figured us out. thus all the losses. thus unable to win on the road.. then you thrown in our team was not ready to play many games last year. which is totally on your coach

This is classic CC deflection off what he said. You said Kyle thinks he can just wow people and that other teams won't adjust. I said nothing about not being concerned about pass protection. Really. Not. One. Word.

You're talking in such generalizations you sound like Cohn. "last year we saw teams do the adjustments and we come out stumbling in the second half of games." Go watch the KC game and tell me the same thing.

Football is constant, punch, counter-punch. "As if we are stunned other teams figured us out." LOLOLOLOL. C'mon, it wasn't like we were running Chip Kelly's playbook where he only had 75 plays and only ran 20 per game. For real, I actually kept a playbook of Chip Kelly's time here, I drew out all the plays and he only ran 75 different plays all year. Shanny has well over 300 plays and adjustments in those plays. I've watched the games and when we struggled containing a pass rusher, guess what we'd do. We'd start chipping with a TE or RB or keep a TE in to block or run play-action on an outside receiver sweep to get a DE to stem outside. But no, you're right, because you say we didn't make any adjustments it must mean we didn't.

Just because there are other factors besides the play-calling happening doesn't mean the coach didn't make adjustments. I don't think you realize how stupid you're calling Kyle if he weren't to make adjustments. That's the kind of crap Jim Hostler did. If you can't see the difference between Kyle and Hostler.......maybe we need to have you evaluated.

the sky is falling, oh no

its nice you have no negative thoughts on our o line. the line has been very negative in terms of pass protection for years no matter the qb. if you think we can be a playoff team with this line that gives zero confidence to our qb.. well..its admirable
Guys on KNBR are calling Jimmy's performance a 'Blutarsky' comparing it to Bluto's grade point average in 'Animal House'. 0.00. Might as well have a laugh over it.
Boy, Jimmy looked scared.

Not good!

Sure but how much do you want him sliding around against that DL with 2 starters missing on the OL in a game that means nothing?

Didn't we just discuss how he should learn to protect himself and live to play another down? Let's not change the narrative now just because we didn't like the result in a preseason game.

Argh, I hate to bring this dude up, but he mentioned something that also crossed my mind. Cohn mentioned that Jimmy had zero play-action passes last night.

Why?!

Just because someone is stupid, doesnt mean all of his thoughts are stupid.

That is one thing that drives me nuts about the anti-Grant Cohn people. Yes. overall he is a moron who says dumb things. But that doesnt mean everything he says needs to be dismissed.

Cohn was right on with his comments about Jimmy's lack of playaction last night. A very good point.

What do you two think of my hypothesis on this?

whats wrong with him avoiding contact better by moving around in the pocket instead of just standing there like a rusty statue?
im looking at it as he didnt slide around in the pocket because he was hesitant to do so or not confident in his knee full yet during a real game. i dont want to see that, i want to see him comfortable moving around. but the coaching staff needs to call better plays to allow him to do that too

I'm good with the comparison...

Let's not forget how Animal House ended for Mr. Blutarsky...

Got the babe and became a US Senator.

So in the great words of Bluto "Was it over when the Broncos bombed Pearl Harbor!?"

It wasn't...and this isn't the end for Jimmy.
