NFL revenues are a multi faceted model of income streams. They earn revenue on licensing, retail at games, ticket sales, and television contracts. These contracts are with espn NBC fox directv, etc. the value of these contracts are SOLELY based on viewership numbers as advertisers want the most exposure to their ads. The contracts are renegotiated every few years and Gooddell and Demaurice Smith negotiate the contract between NFL and NFLPA based on the profit and loss these combined football teams have and this is how player salaries etc are paid. The average consumer of premium channels and/or physical presence at these games has some level of discretionary income. Like it or not, these people don't want politics mixed with their entertainment. This will flow down to the players salaries eventually and the respect the players are protesting for will be systematically taken from them as viewership declines. Watching these players choose to reduce their salaries and the salaries of future football players in real time is extremely surreal. They are absolutely affecting change I just don't think they are going to like the result.

+1...Next bargaining agreement is 2020 so timing by the players couldn't be worse.

It's a very real issue. I wish people would stop dismissing the reason for their protest as something that doesn't exist.

The issue does exist. The problem is that they went at it the wrong way. Kap and them started doing this last year, exactly how has them taking a knee fixed the problem since then? Mf's got tiki torches now. They could've went right at the issue like how the NBA did when it came to same sex awareness.

NBA wasn't like "Oh, I'm just gonna take a knee until people really fix the issue". They actually did something about that. Educate and influence.

If people silently and non-violently protesting cops getting away with murdering unarmed civilians motivates other people to arm themselves to the teeth while walking around with torches and chanting "Jews will not replace us", I think it's pretty clear which group is the problem and which group isn't.

Nearly 2/3rds of White Americans (62%) disagreed with Civil Rights activists who non-violently protested over African Americans legally not being allowed to eat in the same restaurants, drink from the same water fountains, and sit wherever they wanted on public transportation.

Some NFL fans booing over a silent and non-violent protest neither surprises me nor impresses me.

Yes, it makes me think people watch sports for escapism, not for political sermons.

It also makes me think about the number of people murdered in Chicago last year. (762 in one year) Over 4000 people were shot in 2016.

Chicago doesn't even have the highest murder rate per capita. It's not even top ten.

More people have been killed in Chicago over the last ten years than troops in the Iraq/Afghan wars.

Cities with warzone murder rates are spread across the USA. What does this generate? Well, murder is the leading cause of death for all black people age 14-35. That age group was also responsible for committing 53% of this nations murders for 20+ years. This also generates higher levels of police contact.

Unlawful police shootings make up less than 1% of black homicides. The "black community" in America is under siege and we should be taking a knee but not to protest cops we should be protesting these warzone murder rates. Conditions cops have to work in. Black cops, White, Latino and otherwise.

ON AVERAGE black males age 14-45 are FAR more likley to commit gun violence compared to all other demographics. This is why they experience more police contact. Police contact can be dangerous, especially when you don't follow orders. Cops have killed people even when they do follow orders but it's by far not the norm.

Your city is a shining example of why police have become militarized in the US. They're mirroring the brutality in the streets of the USA.

Drug sales and gun violence along with armed robbery and pimping plague large cities and police have to jump into the middle of it all each and every day. You want to minimize police contact? Minimize street violence. Especially gun violence.

Bad cops have abused all races and age groups. Police brutality is an issue but it pales in comparison to this warzone murder culture. Police brutality is actually fed by this culture and by violence from all racial groups but life in the suburbs is far different than life in East Oakland or Garfield Park (Chicago). It's undeniable.

Also, the vast majority of police shooting victims are men. Are cops sexist murderers or are men out there committing more serious violent crime compared to women?

(You ignored this the first time and will do so again because you don't want to think)

Excellent post.

If I am an animal control agent and the majority of the time that I see animal bites they come from bunnies and result in rabies, Ima be on edge and ultra careful and more likely to do what I need to prevent that damn bunny that I am currently dealing with from biting me and giving me rabies.

Police should treat all black people like rabid animals and all white people as human beings?
Sounds un-American.

The players of the NFL are choosing to deliberately alienate their fanbase...I think it's a significant point if you're a fan of Professional football because it hurts the game at a moment when there are external factors that are trying to kill it...

And I'm sure the same fans booing were cheering or dialed into the game once it started not caring if the player helping their team make a play was a player who kneeled.

Viewership is down nearly 20% since the protests have started...it's having an effect

"NBC's "Sunday Night Football" in the first two weeks of the regular season is down 7% in viewership compared to last year; ESPN's "Monday Night Football," is down 5%; and the averages of Sunday afternoon games on Fox and CBS are down 11% and 19% respectively, according to Nielsen data. Also, CBS hasn't yet had a 4:25 p.m. national game this season, which usually brings in the biggest viewership of the weekend."

There are a ton of other articles out there and the viewership drop is trending in the wrong direction right now...interested to see how the ratings were this weekend.

That doesn't show 20% all around. And that is compared to the average of last season. I will wait and see what this year's average is after the season is over.

This one covers ticket sales...there are also reports of declining merchandise numbers and now people are canceling their NFL sunday ticket contracts as DirectTV is currently offering refunds for the season directly linked to the anthem protest.

And kneeling during the anthem fixes this how? Why not address the police and those idiots with the torches directly? You can either build a bridge for awareness and understanding or you can burn it down.

I'm not saying that there isn't an issue. I'm saying that this ain't fixing the problem.
