San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears fans found themselves rooting for the same team Monday night, as Chicago handed the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks a 34-17 loss at Lumen Field.
The result boosted the 49ers' position in the NFC West standings, dropping Seattle to 4-4, the same record as the Los Angeles Rams. San Francisco remains comfortably atop the division at 6-1, despite significant injuries through the first half of the season.
The Seahawks' loss also gives the 49ers some breathing room as they prepare for the second half of their schedule. However, San Francisco cannot afford to become complacent. The team is coming off its bye week following a disappointing loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7.
The 49ers will look to get back on track and avoid letting that first defeat turn into a losing streak. San Francisco will have an opportunity to do just that Sunday when it hosts the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi's Stadium.
If the season ended today, the 49ers would own the No. 1 seed in the NFC and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Seahawks and Rams, both viewed as favorites for the NFC West title entering the season, would be outside the playoff picture.
NFC West standings
- San Francisco 49ers — 6-1
- Seattle Seahawks — 4-4
- Los Angeles Rams — 4-4
- Arizona Cardinals — 3-5
