He sucked before he came here. He sucks now. Great for depth though.

I'm not sure he's an upgrade over Brock Coyle.

Smith is an upgrade over Coyle, and if he's not, then he will be let go. Highly doubt Smith is going any where, he should be starting for us this year, and his experience in the system is a big bonus for us.

Brock Coyle is not that good. At least Smith brings coverage skills and legit speed to the position.

With Foster possibly being suspended for god knows how long, no, it's not.

Does Smith really factor into the plans for the future? Should be?

we certainly need him to be for this coming year. as of now. in my opinion. if you remove foster from the list . i guess he and the guy we got from the chargers. who i like. are our best linebackers
. no offense to elijah and coyle but come one guys.. this is one sorry group in my opinion. we need a inside guy early in my opinion since the team is looking like they will pass on a vet. and yes . we need an outside linebacker to rush the passer because. well eli will come out of my mouth and i am trying to be nice today

Given Saleh loves him and sees him as the most experienced in this defense, there's little doubt in my mind he not only starts at either MIKE or WILL but he'll wear the green dot and be the "communicator" of the defense. That person needs to be counted on and capable --- which rules out Reuben Foster as evidenced by him losing that role last year, passing off to Brock 'freak'n' Coyle at MIKE.
Plus he's only 28 and his injury was to the upper body (pec). He shouldn't lose any speed and range here and he's back playing in a defense he fits and in a system he can just "play."
Plus he'll only count $4.450M against the cap and cutting him would cost $8.1M in dead money.
He'll be starting.

More reason not to draft a LB at #9.

I want Edmunds at 9. He can fill in for Foster while he's suspended, and he can play along side him when he returns. Edmunds also has the raw tool set to become a good Leo in time. Win-win with Edmunds, and Iike a LB core of Edmunds-Foster-Smith.

a great case can be made for this theory. then get your pass rusher and guard in round two and three?
