I'd rather have a long safety like Tartt matchup with TEs than a LB the way TEs are getting athletic. I'm only talking about nickel packages which is becoming played more than base package.

Often the nickel looks like the base package.

I believe that reality, along with the fact our current group of CBs are nothing special, is why Baalke drafted the way he did. We need to get better as a team, defending the pass. One of the best ways to do that is to take away the run (Buckner) and bring pressure (Blair) and put 5 or 6 guys in the secondary who can cover guys like Gronk and Kelce and the rest. As you say, there are some very good TEs in the league now. Teams that can defend them well will win games.

This guy skips leg day. A lot.

Like I said, Randy Moss of CB's LOL

Randy had explosion despite his frame. I don't know enough about this guy to say he would do the same. I assume you're talking about the eyeball test, like I was.

Yes, I was just poking a little fun at the rook's body style.

Hey, if the kid can make an impact in the league the way Randy did, more power to him. Just as long as he doesn't steal my stuff.

Interesting that the 49ers sent the team chaplain to talk with this kid. Often having a strong spiritual influence around a kid that has had troubles in the past gives them a sense of belonging and hope that goes well beyond the tough business of football. Good insight on Baalke's part to do this.

ROTFL
He apparently ran a 10.46 100m in HS.

Now I can see why he was drafted after a year away from football.

He'd be great at the robber position.

I looked up Earl Smith and he is a chaplain at San Quentin.
So, I think the meeting might have also been to get a read on the kid. Was he just young and dumb with a weak spot for football? Or is he a troublemaker that hides behind the football player image? (I'm hoping the former, kind of like Lynch.)

What do you mean often the nickel looks like the base package? There are different players on the field. Both OLBs become primary edge rushers. Most of the time it's the nose that gets removed in exchange for a slot CB. I guess besides that, then nickel looks like base.

What I meant to say was that teams often start out with nickel rather than the more traditional base. That just seems to be the way this passing league is evolving.
The guy robbed his teammate?

I agree. Sounds like the good Reverend believes this was just a misdirected kid that needed some time to get his life turned around.
