I had a feeling we would draft Joshua Garnett when the reports came out that Chip Kelly spent a lot of time with him prior to the draft.
The only issue I have with the pick is that I don't think we needed to move up. We have no idea what ARI and SEA were really going to do with their picks.
And even if we had missed out on Garnett, there are some other potential starters available for the interior:
G - Cody Whitehair - Kansas St
G/C - Max Tuerk - Michigan St
G/C - Isaac Seumalo - Oregon St
I do like the fact that Baalke is willing to be aggressive in this draft though. That's a good thing going into Day 2 tomorrow.
While this is true, moving up like that meant that Baalke clearly had Garnett as the top player or OG on his board. He could have settled for one of those other players if he stays at #37 but this way you take the luck out of it and get your guy.

Garnett has started in 26 consecutive over the past 2 years to finish his career. He has a massive well-proportioned frame with longer arms (33 7/8") and big hands (10 1/8). He is a physical and powerful run blocker who also showed improved balance and awareness with his overall play in 2015 including in pass protection. Took part in one of the better battles with Oregon DE Deforest Buckner throughout our film study. Garnett is the top-guard in this class and should quickly develop into a starter ideally for a power-man scheme.
Pass Protection-3-Possesses a wide and thick frame with adequate short-area quickness. Powerful upper body and flashes a heavy punch to neutralize defenders. When able to gain position and lock on he has good mirror skills. Strong anchor to handle power moves and shows ability to sink hips and anchor when initially pushed back. Most of his problems in this area stem from him lunging. Susceptible to effective push/pull or swim moves. Needs to show more patience and sit back in sets.
Run Blocking-1-Built for a power blocking scheme. Thick and massive trunk with natural inline power. Flashes explosive initial pop. When playing with leverage and in balance has the ability drive and steer defenders off the ball. Angles improved in 2015. Doesn't always play with great balance and will fall off blocks when he lunges. While he doesn't have great athleticism in space he is nimble on his feet for size and does a nice job of adjusting on the fly.
Awareness-2-More instinctive as a run blocker than in pass pro at this point. Quickly identifies targets in the run game. Also does a nice job of locating targets at the second level or open field with short-pull or off of combo block. Adequate awareness for defensive line stunts in pass pro. Much quicker identifying pressure from the second and third level in 2015.
Toughness-1-Plays with the physical demeanor. Has an edge and willing to mix it up. Works to sustain blocks and will finish when given the opportunity.
