Mangini will still take the job because he has nowhere else to go. He is now the 49ers proprietary redheaded stepchild.

He had 2 job titles w/us and if worse really came to worse - they'd come up with a 3rd.

If Vrabel takes the job....DB coach would be my guess, something he was actually good at.

Or because he hasn't been released from his contract?

I am guessing a change in job title would breach the contract.

For real?
I think so. Wouldn't mind him being back for consistency purposes but it didn't take our players THAT long to apply his "complicated" defense. We have some damn good/smart defensive players and I think they can apply just about any 3-4 scheme well.
Just think Mangini was a little more about his playbook than he was about the matchups.
Actually it did take them awhile. In fact a bit past the halfway mark of the season they scaled back part of the Defense. Mad things a bit simpler and they improved. It was expected that he would open up his defense again this year now that they were getting it.
Offense did the same things scaled back some of the book.

He'll be the DB's coach like his title in NE, pretty good at it too so he ain't really gone...just ain't calling defensive plays.

My guess is chip hits the ground running Then there is the enigmatic mangini D, which supposedly, it takes two yrs to learn. Does anyone really think chip is going to retain a DC whose D takes 2 yrs to learn and nobody seems to have it down cold yet. Somehow, i just don't see chip standing still for a D that won't work for 2 yrs or more. He is going to want someone to plug guys in and have a D they can play welll in,...and that means this week, not 2 yrs from now. So yes, i see mangini gone.

One thing I heard loud and clear today was Kelly saying he was talking to each player on the team one on one. He will learn a lot about how guys like Bowman feel toward Mangini, if only by subtle reference. Then he can decide just how far along the learning curve the defense was in the Mangini system. If there are glowing reports and evidence then he may keep EM, but if it's just a mild endorsement...goodbye.
Not that this would be the deciding factor. Kelly knows defense and likely already has a good idea how good the Mangini D is. So players would only be confirmation or not.

Unless he has options, Vrabel would be nuts to decline this offer.

And we know that was an offer because Kelly denied it?
