Wow, they sure jacked Mangini around. Leaving him hanging there while letting the public know that other offers were being made and turned down. Not a good look for Chip Kelly to start off his time in San Francisco. This will leave a bad taste in a lot of mouths, which will linger for a long time. What did he need that extra week for, pack a semi trailer with snacks for his new home?

GreatGabbert ignoring the fact that all the coaches from last year were given ability to seek other employment from other teams immediately after JT was fired. Mangini was never guaranteed anything with a new HC coming in (except the $$ owed him on his contract).

Nobody likes that 49er staple of using prevent and bend but don't break defenses. Got to get pass rushers, LBs, play up and be aggressive or the D will live on the field. I worry because the D was set up that way even when the Niners weren't scoring any points and really needed the ball back.
In fairness, 9ers coach Dick Nolan was one of, if not the main, inventor of the bend don't break defense...and one of the most successful coaches at the time. Always came close, but never made the SB. Mangini is the opposite type DC. He likes sending players from almost ever position on blitzes and uses many variations in the backfield. Fangio was closer to Nolan Sr than most DCs we've had.
Yeah,, he played for NYG when the OC and DC were Lombardi and Landry...quite a learning situation. Then he coached for Landry in Dallas. But his defense was frustratingly predictable in the bend don't break mold.

While there were problems on the defense, some DBs did extremely well for the most part. Acker was consistently on his guy and made very strong tackles. he usually seemed to know where he should be, though in a couple of games he was out of position. With another year they may have become very good as a group. This is still true whoever they chose as DC...I really like these young DBs as a group, a lot of versatitity.

I don't really care if the DC is Mangini or Vrabel, or Chip's 9 year old nephew, but the way it was handled was sloppy and insensitive. A clear lack of "EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE", so I guess we shouldn't be surprised. Beyond that though, it reeks of incompetence. If they said that Mangini was one of several candidates in consideration, fine. But the whole thing with Vrabel was a huge mess and an eyesore on Kelly's tenure before he even gets going. Someone leaked the story of Vrabel declining the job, which obviously puts Eric in an impossible situation. Who is going to want it now? It's the fat girl passed out on the couch at the end of the party, with semen dripping from her t**t.
