The defense did make progress in 2015...changes need to happen, but I can see the logic in retaining him. Add a stud NT, sign a FA vet, start Armstead and he'd have the makings of an improved front 3, which is critical to stem the tide of teams piling up the yds on the ground and not creating opportunities for our pass rushers to do their job. His players seemed to enjoy playing for him...and his overall coaching experience is definitely a plus for Kelly.

They already have a stud NT. Ian Williams has to be the most underappreciated 49er in recent memory. By every measure he was one of the best NT's in football, this year and last year when he was healthy. I hope that they bring him back because he has stepped his game up quite a bit.

We absolutely need to keep Ian Williams and one more guy to his right side.

I thought Williams was our best D Lineman. The guy is a beast.

Williams is defiantly an unsung hero on defense. With the amount of cap space available there's no reason why we can't hammer out a deal with this guy. We really need to keep him. Its one less hole to worry about
Buckner/Williams/Armstead would be a nice line. Then Dial//Purcell/Dorsey as backups. That's with just one additional DL. OLB needs more help. A LB group with Harold/Hodges/Bowman/Lynch would be OK but light on experience. Would be good to find a veteran to add. Wilhoite's a FA and might not be quick enough and Armstrong is more a STs guy. Do they count on Lemonier, Brooks and Skov? Noah Spence in the 2nd round?
Yeah we should keep Ian.
Buckner? who?
i think Dorsey is a goner.. maybe Carradine as well.. although i like to see him play some more.. Lemonier had his chance.. next..

I just don't like all the fake the blitz drop him to cover deep while the safety comes from way out and doesn't get there. I mean maybe it's just the players not understanding and it'll all better with more time and more talent. Just don't see it ever being elite

They seemed to be very slow to make their move and telegraphed blitzes at times. Dropping the LBs to cover WRs was addressed by Bowman after the season and he said there was just confusion on handing off the receiver. DBs were suppose to pick them up and the LB would be free to stay in the middle to cover short routes of perform late blitzes. I noticed there were fewer glaring examples of this toward the end of the year. Pittsburgh and the first Arizona games were brutal.

Hope this is just something that needs to be practiced and that experience will make it more fluid. If they retain Mangini.

Respect. Nice post.
Mangini is probably one of the better choices out there
Give Mangini some real pass rushers to replace Lemonier and Brooks. See what happens.

This. Ian is the one FA that absolutely must be re-signed. He's one of the few young building blocks we have.
