He later corrected himself on that tweet.

Philadelphia owes Kelly about $13 million over the next two years, but that total will be offset by the deal Kelly signs with San Francisco, a league source told ESPN's Darren Rovell.

John McMullen ‏@JFMcMullen Jan 15 Chip Kelly did have an offset in his #Eagles deal so big winner is Jeffrey Lurie whose buyout went from $13m to potentially only $1m #49ers

Meanwhile, Kelly could be close to finding his next job. Lurie certainly hopes he does. The risk of being upstaged by Kelly and the Niners is offset by the fact that Lurie would owe Kelly about $13 million over the next two seasons unless he is hired elsewhere.

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has apparently avoided millions in buyout obligation to Chip Kelly, who was hired Thursday as the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelly, who was fired in his third season as coach of the Eagles with one week to go in the regular season, will receive a four-year deal worth $24 million from the 49ers, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Here is the tweet he sent out a day later. Kelly is getting paid $6 mil a year by the 49ers so the Iggles owe him $500,000 a year for two years.

Darren Rovell ‏@darrenrovell Jan 15 League source confirms Eagles would not in fact owe Chip Kelly anything if he makes at least $6.5M a year over next 2 seasons w/49ers

His defense wasn't fooling anybody and it was needlessly complex. Kind of the antithesis of Kelly which is ease of operation, eliminating cumbersome verbiage hence the simple play cards. Doesn't mean it's not scematically complex.

I disagree. Much of the problem last yeara was having very young DBs trying to learn complex defensive concepts. At times they looked really bad. But they have had a year under the system and will be improved next year. Mangini tends to use more players than many DCs which is helpful since Kelly's offense will require them to play more possessions. The lack of a pass rush killed the niners last year so I expect more than one top pass rusher to be added, from FAs and draft.

I just don't like all the fake the blitz drop him to cover deep while the safety comes from way out and doesn't get there. I mean maybe it's just the players not understanding and it'll all better with more time and more talent. Just don't see it ever being elite

Gave up a lot of yards but 18th in ppg which is slightly less than average. We will add more talent this offseason and the guys already here will have experience so they will be more comfortable and playing faster. Plus it will keep Billy Davis away
Although I suppose he's better than Billy Davis or some untested guy. Maybe Pettine has some sort of late night revelation and realizes that he would love to coach the Niners.

They seemed to be very slow to make their move and telegraphed blitzes at times. Dropping the LBs to cover WRs was addressed by Bowman after the season and he said there was just confusion on handing off the receiver. DBs were suppose to pick them up and the LB would be free to stay in the middle to cover short routes of perform late blitzes. I noticed there were fewer glaring examples of this toward the end of the year. Pittsburgh and the first Arizona games were brutal.

Hope this is just something that needs to be practiced and that experience will make it more fluid. If they retain Mangini.
The 49ers ranked 10th in PPG allowed in 2014 and slipped to 18th under Mangini.

New England ranked 2nd in PPG allowed in 2004 befor Mangini, 17th in 2005 under Mangini and back to 2nd in 2006 after he left.

Check the difference in rosters for each.

Both teams faced some pretty extreme circumstances. That New England team that Mangini was the DC of still has the NFL record for most defensive starters in a season. They were absolutely devastated by injury that year. I believe they had like 15 different starters in their secondary alone.

Mangini might ultimately be the bad luck guy or something but its hard to derive much of a conclusion about his stints as DC due to the major personnel issues.

Manginis D can work, but relies heavily on a pass rush which the niners didn't have last year. Balke needs to address this as a top priority this season or this defense will struggle. No pass rush allows teams to fucus on picking up the blitz, which is what happened a majority of the time last year. With an edge pass rush it throws off being able to puck up blitzing players and thus the pocket becomes chaotic. It's a must have to get off the field and minimize playing three extra games of defense in 2016.

He has not improved a defense anywhere he has been a coordinator. 2nd/9th to 17th/26th and to 2nd/6th is hard to explain away even when considering Brusci's stroke.

I wish he had a track record that gave hope.

I know there are other factors but I don't see what makes him an attractive DC candidate. He couldn't get a DC job anywhere when the 49ers hired him to work with the TE's (who got worse under him).

I think he is a much better candidate than Bill Davis. At least with Mangini you can see the wheels spinning and some pretty good coaches have liked him quite a bit, including Harbaugh and Belicheck.

My preference by far is for Pettine but barring that, Mangini is pretty much as good as any of the remaining 3-4 guys out there and something could be said for continuity as the defense did show some improvement over the course of the season as guys began figuring out their assignments.

Bringing in some better pieces and hopefully some more pass rushers should continue that if Mangini is the guy.

Here's what I see...Kelly would arguably like to retain Mangini because there'd be some continuity on defense. Also, since Philly has denied permission to hire/interview 3 of the Eagles coaches Kelly wants, the chances for him to retain Mangini would seem to have increased. The defense did make progress in 2015...changes need to happen, but I can see the logic in retaining him. Add a stud NT, sign a FA vet, start Armstead and he'd have the makings of an improved front 3, which is critical to stem the tide of teams piling up the yds on the ground and not creating opportunities for our pass rushers to do their job. His players seemed to enjoy playing for him...and his overall coaching experience is definitely a plus for Kelly.

They already have a stud NT. Ian Williams has to be the most underappreciated 49er in recent memory. By every measure he was one of the best NT's in football, this year and last year when he was healthy. I hope that they bring him back because he has stepped his game up quite a bit.
