We didn't need hindsight. We knew it was a mistake right when it happened,

Fangio should've been the next head coach but incompetence rules.

He's gone as d-coordinator but perhaps Fangio could still be had as a head coach. Not that I think York would do it but an apology and promotion could smooth things over quick. Maybe he's not a great head coach but seeing what he could have done with the current d would have made the evaluation process easier.

No doubt, Vic + Gase as a HC would have been a pretty sweet thing to have on paper. Fangio had us top 5 last year with 19 players on I.R. and the mass majority of them, starters on defense. But TBF, nobody knows how Gase would have been as a HC "and" an OC at the same time. The biggest concerns about Gase was that he was just too young and unproven at the coaching level to come in and command respect and manage a team. And this is why he didn't get any other interviews to be a HC elsewhere. Same with Fangio...fans that wanted either Gase or Fangio as a HC need to remember, neither were seriously considered anywhere (except here) and as a result, both ended up retaining their original OC and DC positions (of which, they are both very good at). If Gase came here, who knows how much being a HC would pull from his OC mindset (his strength). On paper, it sounds nice but who knows how well it would really work.

And as much as I love Fangio (and would take him over Mangini), it was his choice to leave and his defense still gives up a ton of points (24 a game)...long-term though, I'm willing to bet Fangio's defense ends up better than Mangini's in all the important defensive stats. And Fangio has always owned Rodgers and the Packers but keep in mind, we frustrated the hell out of him too...only gave up 17 points (13 for Fangio).

We play them next week, let's see what he can do against our vaunted offense!!

Rodgers overthrew all game trying to get PI calls. Balls weren't even near the wr vicinity until 3rd and 4th down.

If his WR catch a td it's game over. you can only give a team so many chances. Somehow, the Bears got away with that one.

I miss watching Fangio/Donatell's Quarters scheme so much. I don't care if he never blitzes. Watching Mangini's "confuse everyone on the field" zone defense is boring.

Yup simple scheme for the defense let's them play fast. Mangini does too many things probably confuses themselves makes our guys play slow. We had it all and now it's gone. Really wanted to see fangio get his shot.

Why would he come back here as a HC? He will get a HC gig somewhere else. If I were him I'd go elsewhere and beat the tar out of the 9ers every meeting.

Given the circumstances with the OL (Kilgore, Thomas/Martin not ready yet & Davis' late retirement), we were doomed on offense anyway...then CK had to be hospitalized for mental illness. Nobody predicted that. Oh, and then the bell cow goes down with injury after swimming upstream for numerous games. What's next? Oh yeah, Boldin. That said, after careful review of the film thread, since Gabbert took over, we're seeing a much more open WCO playbook under GeepLo. In fact, it's starting to look like a legit offense even without Boldin, Hyde, VD, Boldin, etc. I'll reserve judgement until the final 6 games are done though.

D? I couldn't agree more. Why Mangini thought going Anti-Fangio would be a great idea and force his system on the personnel (that all didn't fit) was/is ridiculous!

I'm not a fan of Tomsula as a HC either but we can all admit at least he and the staff are willing to coach up and start young players (save for Pears )...that's a great thing in a year 1 rebuild.

At least by the end of the year, Baalke will have his work cut out for him and know exactly what direction we'll need to go (including HC, OC & DC).

I agree, I don't think he would have any interest either. I'm just saying that because he is still just a coordinator, technically that ship hasn't completely sailed.
