I never really had any issues with Kilgore. Garopollo liked him and he won the Bobb McKittrick Award as the team's best offensive lineman this year so they thought he must have some merit. But the writing was on the wall as soon as Richburg was signed. And as another sign of Lynch's handling of things one of the articles noted that the $2 million dollar roster bonus he was due wasn't scheduled until tomorrow, 3 days after the beginning of the league year, so that if the team found somebody better in FA they could move on before they had to pay the bonus. Smart move by the team and everything works out for the best. We get a center that has been rated as one of the top five in the league and a favorite webzone whipping boy gets to move on closer to home with his salary being taken off the books here and handed to the Dolphins who just lost their starting center. Win, win I'd say.

Best and most liked are two different things...
When I read that (Kilgore winner of award) I had to check. It's true, Kilgore won the award last season. Zane Beadles won it in 2016. Now I know that award doesn't mean much.

Some aspect of it must be linked to playing time....like, "of the lineman that states the most games, who was most valuable"

" The award is meant to honor those offensive linemen who have best represented the courage, intensity and sacrifice displayed by the late Coach McKittrick during his 21 years of service with the 49ers."

It's not just about playing ability, but about effort.
Got it. In that case, the list of winners should read:
2012: Joe Staley
2013: Joe Staley
2014: Joe Staley
2015: Joe Staley
2016: Joe Staley
2017: Joe Staley

THAT BEING SAID, does it NOT look like we screwed Daniel?

We get him to sign a team friendly discount...which he agreed to (I'm sure to play with Jimmy and be part of something special they are building here).... then he has this cheap contract, we trade him... and now he the Dolphins get him for this team discount to play with Tannahill and Cutler

If we didn't bring him back, I'm sure he could've got more on the open market, ESPECIALLY if the Dolphins were going to release Pouncy.

I don't know man... that whole sequance doesn't look good.

It is very unlikely another team would have given him as much as we did. He got money and a chance to be a starter.
Wow, just wow. People up in airs over the move. Making like Lynch and the front office are the only ones that do this. While I understand people wanted more compensation, it was primarily to get the money off the contract off the books before Friday. Getting to move up a couple places was just in addition.

Both Weston and Kilgore are the same in that their best position is center and they weren't all that great at guard. Weston is younger and according to his former teammate is a fit for the system run by Kyle which requires the center to be good at executing a reach block.

The resigning of Kilgore was insurance in case they didn't get Weston. I don't know why people feel that the F.O. owes a player a consultation about whether they are okay if they brought in a better player to compete. Players that start and do reasonably well or anyone in any field have a hard time being demoted or bypassed for promotion, so they want to move on. Lynch accommodated him. The niners are also trying to get younger. To say Garnett and Magnuson can't do the job when they are so young and been given the chance is being short sighted. Sometimes you have to give it a chance. Norwell, whom many wanted was an UDFA who rose thru the ranks. Who is to say Magnuson can't be that? The niners liked and kept him and had good things to say about him, just that he needed to develop certain aspects of his game. Speaking of Norwell, it seems they checked by he wasn't really on their radar according to reports, possibly cause they knew he would end up costing tackle money. So he ended up being a scratch.

But this whole idea that Lynch messed up in his handling is so laughable. It is a business. If people recall Walsh was really cut throat. Remember Charlie Young the TE, gone when they brought in Russ Francis. Wendall Tyler, gone when they decided to promote Roger Craig after obtaining Rathman to replace Craig. These were guys that produced at a high level.

Relax-the people we already have may end up pulling thru for us and there is always the draft or the second part of FA.
It's funny how many posters around here thought that Kilgore was making backup money, turns out he's the 15th highest paid center

That's been the theme for almost every free agent signing for the last two offseasons. Only way Paraag can get players to sign is to over pay.

That is true for any team in most cases FA get overpaid. You really think Watkins is worth $16M a year. The only guys on FA market cheap are they guys you lock up early before they hit the market.

Jimmy will get over it the first time he realizes he can step into a pass without pressure.

lol,, god this is the truth. jimmy probably secretly signed off on the deal to lynch and kyle

LOL.

Kilgore did not sign a team friendly deal. He signed a Kilgore friendly deal, and then acted like it was team friendly.

I was worried when they gave him that contract they were goin budget with the OL, but with Richburg there, Kilgore is obsolete. He cant play G.

Basically the club view Kilgore as an insurance policy in case they did not get their guy in FA. Nothing wrong with that, and they gave Kilgore the trade he wanted.

This is a business.

this

Lynch made certain we at least had a center that was serviceable in case nothing worked out in FA or the draft.

Now we not only have a center, we have one that is more agile and better suited to the scheme than was Kilgore. The fact Bully Boy Pouncey requested his release just now worked out in Kilgore's favor. The trade value indicates that Lynch was willing to release Kilgore if nothing better came up. (in effect, that is about what happened.

Webzone never ceases to amaze.

Never.....
and then some of us hated kilgore from day one. i do not understand those whining he should be around for depth. he is crap as a starter. you think he would all of a sudden be a good back up. oh well. not our problem anymore. now i think aa and eli will be cut next but it may not be till camp. their impotence will take care of it for us

That may be overstating it a bit, however, it is a fact that California has the highest personal income tax rate in the nation, along with VERY high property value/taxes in the Bay Area. Hence, it would be accurate to say that the 49ers have to pay 15% more than Jacksonville to even out the higher cost of living here.

They only apply this reasoning to the 49ers. All 31 other teams get guys to sign at a discount.
There really is nothing bad about trading Kilgore (except for it making some people get stupid about it). He didn't want to be a backup center or play guard. Richburg is exponentially better than Kilgore.

Football has so many variables it can make anyone seem stupid but let's not forget this is entertainment and fun and (almost) all of us are 49 fans; me since the 1950's. I remember going to a game at Kezar against the Rams and seeing only one small concession stand selling a total of about five different items.

Also, I live in Seahawk country and their fans are horrified about what is happening. Just wait to see what is coming if you think this is bad. Ha ha. It's been a rough few years for me up here.
Thanks Dan, you were a good 49ers and seemingly a great guy. Good luck in Miami.
