You're right. Could have been Sing's. Weren't there rumors that Baalke and Sing argued in the war room over picking Mays?

They weren't rumors, there was visual evidence of it since they were streaming the War Room during the draft. Singletary was in control and Baalke wasn't the GM yet, he was still just the personnel head who was filling in the day-to-day work of the GM since McC left and they hadn't hired one yet.

Also makes me think Sing was in on the "lets move up and grab Davis" mentality.

It is likely, but in defense of that pick, Davis was universally acknowledged as the tackle with the most upside in the draft. He was just raw as hell and will probably come around. He needs work still, but he wasn't that bad last game lined up against Mario.

Baalke should have put him out there before the coaches were able to give him an actual chance to show something? I don't think the coaches would have been very happy with that and I'm sure Mays was put out there once the coaches informed Baalke that he would most likely get cut. No team would give a 4th or 5th rounder for a player who was getting 3rd string reps. Teams are not idiots. They would take into account that we have Goldson, Smith, Williams, Whitner, and Spillman. It was obvious we weren't keeping Mays.

As Mike Maiocco stated last week, Baalke was in charge of the draft and had the last word. He simply capitulated to Singletary for Mays instead of drafting his guy, Jimmy Clausen.

Yes, the beat writers have already stated that the argument happened before the Niners were on the clock. Since Clausen was taken at 48, it allowed Singletary more ammunition to beat on the table for Mays at 49.

Baalke probably hinged his argument on Clausen rather than say "I don't want Mays" and when Clausen was gone, he was stuck.

Regardless of Baalke being the point man and having responsibility, it was pretty obvious and I remember reading several accounts saying this was Singletary's draft. Baalke proceeded to tell Jed that Singletary didn't know how to build a team...this combined with a wonderful season and great coaching lead to Sing's firing.
