After six and a half seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner is returning to the team that selected him seventh overall out of Oregon in the 2016 NFL Draft: the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers traded for Buckner on Tuesday, bringing back the All-Pro defensive tackle they dealt to Indianapolis in 2020. His return strengthens San Francisco's interior defensive line, pairing him with Osa Odighizuwa and adding a proven playmaker to a unit whose depth has been tested by injuries.
On Wednesday morning, Buckner took to Instagram to share a farewell message to the Colts organization and its fans.
"Forever grateful to the Indianapolis Colts Organization and Irsay family for blessing me with the opportunity to wear the Horseshoe," Buckner wrote. "These past 6 and a half years have been full of blessings. My family and I are proud to have called Indy our home! I've made some life lasting friendships inside the building and out in the community that I will always cherish."
Buckner has expressed frustration in recent weeks with the Colts' continued struggles and their inability to reach their goals. As he prepared to leave Indianapolis, he acknowledged his disappointment that he couldn't help the organization achieve the success it sought.
"I'm sorry we couldn't get the job done, but just know that I poured my heart and soul into the organization and the community the best way I knew how to. God Bless! Love, 99," Buckner concluded.
Buckner now moves from a Colts team sitting at 2-5 after three straight losses to a 49ers squad at 6-1 and atop the NFC West. His return to San Francisco gives the 49ers an experienced, proven presence on the defensive line as they look to maintain their strong start to the season.
