Perhaps Fangio could use the personnel he has to their strengths...start Cook/Culliver, play press/man and move Cox to the slot (this dude should have at least 5 INTs by now if he had ANY hands at all). The loss of Brock has hurt a lot as well. But scheme seems to be hurting us here and it's even affecting Reid and Bethea.

hey NC I remember you saying that this secondary was an upgrade from last years.

it is. brown is playing like trash rogers isn't even playing

the pass rush is the problem with our secondary. if the qb can sit back there like it's practice and make passes they're going to pick any secondary apart.
the difference is in the past when we had pass rush we had guys who wouldn't make plays on the ball. these guys will and already have even when asked to cover for outrageous lengths of time.
guarantee you if we had our full compliment of linebackers (pass rush...aldon) this secondary would have a lot of interceptions.. even more than they should have had now.

I disagree ward has been just awful and has not business of being in the line up right now. Also Brown was better than Cully.

Ward hasn't been good and he hasn't been getting any help over the top at all which is insane..

And again, brown never had to deal with this while playing for us. he's never had to deal with absolutely ZERO pass rush while playing for the 49ers.

it's a unit.
you cannot have db's cover for 4-6 seconds while the qb has a clean pocket majority of the snaps.
every nfl qb can pick you apart when that happens.
its when they get under pressure they make mistakes.
Cox looks like our best corner right now. He tracks the football in the air much better than Cully.

yah just sucks that he can't catch, I believe he's dropped an Int in the last two games.
Culliver looks average hopefully as the season continues to crumble they start playing Johnson over average Joe's like Culliver

I would be shocked if Cully is re-signed. He's dumb on and off the field.

I think it's more complicated than that. Our guys even said it. It's hard to pass rush when they are constantly on third and short because the run D can't stop the ball carrier. I think it's time to either think about switching to a 4-3 to better utilize the talent available or to try someone else at NT because I.Williams and Dobbs are getting owned out there. Ward does need to get benched though. Maybe bring him back slowly but right now he's an easy 6 for opposing O's
Should have kept T. Brown !

i thought so too until I saw the past 3 raider games...Brown looks worn down. in fact rogers has looked much better
I think people on here tend to forget Culliver was one of the top rated CB's in all of football in 2012. Obviously he was hurt the last yr, and he has shown that shutdown coverage skills at times. I thin kit takes a yr to comeback full swing from any mcl/acl tears. he did have that dumb taunting penalty which was kinda petty because I didn't see a flag on Bennett after he picked manning off & he did the same thing, nor Brown on Davis last night.

Very much so (potential-wise)...but not out of the gate. It would take time for the unit to gel but right now, if you look at the stats, our CBs aren't playing poorly at all and that's w/o Brock on the field and Fangio is using a multitude of players for some odd reason...from Culliver and Cox to Johnson to Cook, etc. Where we've been getting killed though is with the poor rookie Ward and our S's this past game (both Bethea and Reid) and Brock being out (is a killer b/c Fangio won't move Cox inside to the slot again). Teams are clearly scheming well against us in the passing game AND taking shots way down the field (2 TD's to Brown right down the middle of the field), bombs on the sidelines, etc. And they are being completed or penalties. I said in the beginning, it would take time to gel BUT we'd probably generate a lot more TO's and let's be fair...they've gotten some TO's and Cox, had he had any hands at all, would have 5 right now alone. The asteriks I need to add to that original statement...I assumed we'd still have SOME pass rush and right now, our only pass rush has been an inside blitzing LB (usually Willis). Did we even use Lynch last game? And finally, I also assumed Fangio would use press CB's...in press coverage and play to their strengths. To date, I don't think I've seen one true physical press. So a key injury, odd rotating personnel, poor scheme, lack of adjustments, no pass rush, rookie getting torched, etc. are all contributing to some second half meltdowns.

Culliver is just not that good. Can't play press coverage or he gets beat; gives a ten yard cushion and gives up easy plays. Commits stupid penalties. Doesn't turn in coverage. Just not good. I knew it was a big mistake letting go of Morris, who seemed good in coverage and extremely fast. Why do they keep whiffing on corners and continuing to play guys who are mediocre? Stubborn? They love these bend but don't break coverage schemes.
