Yes, but he was a Baalke 3rd round pick.

So he is expected to fail.

Baalke is about 50-50 with 3rd round picks. I'll take those odds any day

Culliver (decent), Lemonier (bust), Thomas (bust), Borland (bust), Martin (bust), Harold (jury still out - but bust written all over him so far).

Also, I'm not giving him Bowman because McCloughan did the work on that draft and Baalke was hired as GM after that draft.

How do you figure Baalke is 50/50?
Did baalke make the Navarro pick? Yes, Then it was his pick. Harold was just drafted last year how can you go about judging what he is or what he can do yet? I'd say Borland was actually a hit with his ability he would have easily become a mainstay at linebacker m, not baalke's fault the guy retired. I doubt he told anybody he would retire after one season. Borland was talented, but had a change of heart after playing. Plus Cully was pretty good not elite, but above average when he was here.

The GM makes the picks, period. At the time, Trent Baalke was acting as GM. How can you give someone credit for something that happened when they weren't there is totally beyond me. That's like the people that credit Bill Walsh for the 49ers winning Super Bowl 24. Chris Borland was a good pick, period. At this point, I'd only judge 2010 - 2014. The way it looks right now, I see 3 hits (Bowman, Culliver, and Borland), one miss (Lemonier), and a guy that we can't judge because we have never seen him play and no one will tell us anything. However, if the staff/front office could judge him, he surely would've been shipped out of here by now. If they would ship off a first round pick after a single season (AJ Jenkins), surely they would drop a third round pick if they thought nothing was there.

Also, since this word is thrown around so liberally on this forum, can we define bust?

In my opinion, it's a player that is drafted high (1st-3rd rounds) and cannot play football on a pro level (see our high picks in the 2012 draft). If the player is drafted in the first round, there are different rules. For example, Tony Jerod Eddie is a bubble player that was an UDFA. Obviously he can play on a pro level, just not at a high level. If he were drafted in the first round, I would consider him a bust.

On another note, Trent Baalke is the king of 7th round picks/UDFAs. His record is actually better than many GMs in the same time frame with first round picks.

Borland is a bust of a pick because he is no longer with us, a complete waist of a draft pick! I find it hard to believe that so many people here are fine with Borland for quitting but crucify Anthony Davis for retiring last year. A bust is a player that doesn't live up to being drafted, and those players on that list have not lived up to being picked in the 3rd round!

Also, I like how you guys conveniently left out Martin and Thomas in regards to being draft bust.

IMHO, a bust is someone who is picked one year and we are already picking his replacement in the following year or two.

Call it what you will, but I am not blaming Baalke for a guy that decided to retire after one season. Give him all the blame he deserves for picking bad players, but a guy that retired early isn't on him. Marcus Martin and Brandon Thomas are well on there way. I would concede Martin because we have seen him play over two seasons and he hasn't shown anything. Brandon Thomas is a total mystery.
