Journalism is a tough world these days. Information moves so fast, that you have to be the first one out with the story. That pressure causes reporters to jump the gun and push anything out that they think gives them a head start.

This is how the actual conversation transpired:

"Hi Jed, is there any way the 49ers would take three number 1's for Jim Harbaugh?"

"Hold on one second, Jimmy I need to Google a number. Here we go, Promises in Malibu. You might run into Lindsey Lohan."

Browns owner - "there was an opportunity there, but it didn't materialize." Kind of a vague comment that anyone could make. I can say there was an opportunity for me to become a professional athlete except for lacking the physical makeup, talent or ability, or to become a f***ing billionaire which isn't close to ever happening. The two sides in this supposed almost trade have very different perceptions in how close or far apart it was from ever actually happening.

The most ironic thing is Harbaugh preaches keeping things in house and cuts people for conduct detrimental to the team if they don't. But he's playing the media to the max to get his contract extension. And if he doesn't he's going to be the most in demand coach when he's free.

I agree. It would make Harbaugh look like the malcontent some claim him to be. This would make me as a fan tend to side more with Jed Trent and Paraag and deduce that Harbaugh is too tough to coexist with for us or anyone for that matter

Because the fans start to get angry, and York has to make a move to show that theres nothing wrong. A Harbaugh extension would calm people down.

Right now York has his entire fanbase getting restless. Hes trying to open a new stadium next year. The last thing he needs is his fans being unsure about the future.

Harbs and his agent want him to be one of the, if not the highest paid coach in the league. He has 2 years left on his deal. It's simple, I would put an extension on the table that gives him a sizable raise because he deserves it. However, in order for his salary to be in the top 3 he has to win it all.

Payton is getting 8 mill, Belichick is getting 7.5. I get the fact that he wants an extension, Fisher and Petey are both making 7 but one of them just won the SB. Give him 7 million a year so he's on par with Petey and Fish, put in a clause that kicks it up to 8-8.5 if he wins it all.

I personally don't think Harbaugh is worried at all about the title "highest paid coach in the league". The guy drives a beat up truck and shops for clothes at Walmart...it's not about the money with him, if so he would be coaching Miami now.

Yup. Pay the man. First coach ever to make three straight NFCC after taking over a team who hadn't been over 500 in many many years.

We are close to the super bowl everyyear and that is awesome. I'm already excited for next year because i know JH will put a good product out there on the field. He just needs to calm the f**k down on the sidelines, manage the clock better, and manage his timeouts and challenges much better. I think he is one of the worst in the league at challenges and wasting timeouts. And i thoought MEtal Mike was bad at those...

This s**t from the Browns is like that nerd who asked the hot girl to the prom. Of course to the nerd -- the Browns-- would think he has a chance otherwise he wouldn't have asked in the first place. But to the hot girl -- the dude has no chance. It would be ridiculous. And that's what Jed is telling the world. It was a ridiculous proposal. He has the hot girl and he ain't gonna give her up. The only people that didn't get it is the Browns. They thought they had the opportunity, when in reality --uh no, you didn't. Harbaugh went ewww... haha no!

I don't think he cares all that much about money. The guy shops at Wal-Mart with his $18 pants. However, I think his agent does care about what he gets paid and Harbs wants the recognition that comes with that and that he is one of the top coaches in the league, otherwise why would there even be an impasse here? If he didn't care about either the title, the money or both then he would continue to coach for the $5 million he's getting paid. Pay the guy his $7 million or so with a clause once he wins a SB that kicks it up and call it a day.

The only hesitancy I can see is that if there is conflict, how many years does the FO want to commit to having to deal with Harbs. Anyways, we're winning the FO needs to STFU too and pay the guy. I don't want there to be tension with Balke because he's responsible for this turnaround but until Harbs loses the locker room pay the man. If the players are still all in with Harbs, which they should be after 3 successful seasons, then there is no reason an extension should not get done.

Also the Browns will take any attention they can get. Anyone can call the Lions and say so "Hey, is Megatron available for 10 1st rounders?"...."Ummmm, no he isn't". Sure the other team inquired, it doesn't mean that a deal was ever a remote possibility. I could not see Harbs going to Cleveland of all places, to coach against his brother regularly for possibly the most inept team, mostly devoid of talent with a few exceptions.

Even if Lombardi is Harbs' friend, there is a reason Peter King was reporting that many promising coaches withdrew their names from the Browns position or avoided it entirely. King might be an East Coast, Pats-loving, Brady/Belichick sucking douche but he is fairly well-connected and people do talk to him.

Look at the reality of the Browns situation, the owner has fraud issues with his companies, he changes coach and GM within a calendar year. Now the owner wants to stir more controversy confirming an issue that was yeaterdays news. Jed can stop all this nonsense by PAYING THE MAN!!!!!!!
