That is not entirely true.

For many years, Stanford was only about academics. Major sports were not a part of the Stanford scene. The 1994 World Cup had a key role in changing that. With the world watching, crowds of people came to a old, ugly, decrepit Stanford Stadium to watch a world class event and the dump was exposed for what it was. The result was that Stanford alumni, some of the wealthiest and most influential in the nation, said,"enough is enough. Time to bring the sports programs in this great institution into line with the rest of the nation." The result was an expensive renovation of the stadium and a decision to make Stanford the most appealing "academic" school for the most gifted scholar/athletes. University brass along with the alums began a strong marketing program to bring in those intellectually gifted athletes that would otherwise be spread around the various "football" schools with mediocre academic standings.

The decision took a couple of years to begin yielding results but by the time Jim Harbaugh arrived there, the football program had begun to turn around and there were some very good athletes in the program. Harbaugh, to his credit, did use his background in bringing more talent to the school, however, Stanford had already done a good job of telling the best athletes who also had excellent grades, that they could now get the best of both worlds at the same place. Harbaugh's arrival was timely and the icing on the cake. Dennis Shaw has continued in the same vein and the program continues to be one of the top 10 in the nation.

It is interesting to note that other school with high academic standards, such as Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, among others, have followed Stanford's lead in going after every top scholar/athlete they can and are having success.

Of course Stanford will never be able to attract the "Oregon" players, but they are drawing plenty of high-quality players to maintain a top tier program.

This s**t is so irritating because they're trying to paint our organization as dysfunctional when it's the f**king Browns who are. I would love to do do something to Florio and that dumb ass owner of the dumpster fire of an organization in s**tland.

Harbaugh probably still gets extended after this whole mess, but...

If we did let him leave, or trade him elsewhere, would you boycott?

I dont care how much Harbaugh "butts heads" with anyone in that front office. If they let one of the elite coaches in the NFL go, the guy who saved us from the dark ages of Niner football, how can we move forward with any sense of confidence that this team knows what the F its doing? It would be pure, idiotic pride from Jed York and Trent Baalke. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Coaches of Harbaugh's caliber are as rare as franchise QB's. You dont just replace them. A big reason why this team is so good is because Jim Harbaugh created a trusting, family type relationship amongst the team. If we lose that, we could easily become that same underperforming team from the Singletary days. We all used to get so frustrated with the talent the 49ers had, but still finished 6-10. Talent was never the issue, it was having a coach who knew what the heck he was doing.

It would make me completely sick to see this team squander a coaching find like this. All over what? A couple mil? Big egos? They will certainly have a hard time selling seats in that new, premium priced stadium if Harbaugh leaves.

All that said, im going to take what the worst organization in pro sports is saying with a grain of salt. I cant help but feel slightly nervous though.

What message is this giving Jim? He came in here and brought this franchise back from the dead. York and Co had a series of disasterous coaching choices. They lucked out on this one. He took less money than Miami because he believed in the management team and the players. He then goes to the NFC championship the first year after a lockout and resurrects Alex Smith. Second Year and third year he goes to the Superbowl and nearly wins both games. Who has every done anything like this? The difference between having won to rings and what he has done is miniscule when evaluating a seasons worth of football.

It is easy to argue there is no one his equal in football today and he's still learning...Look at how look it took Belicheck to get where he is, how he fumbled around in Cleveland. Harbaugh is only going to get better. Tell him you totally believe in him and make him the highest paid coach in the league. This vote of confidence will be repaid back 10 times by the obsessed workaholic that Harbaugh is. He would bleed for a franchise that treated him like that. God, I hope someone gives Jed a reality check quickly before he sours Harbaugh on this franchise and he moves on to someone who will give him what he deserves in salary and even more control over the player selection. If he leaves, so do I, having given up all desire to support the stupid, arrogant and ungrateful Yorks.

I agree with your directive to tone down the rhetoric, however, there has been far too much smoke from way too many directions to not recognize there was a fire someplace a month ago.

I don't like to admit that someone I have grown to like may have been forced into a position of having to lie in order to keep the house in order but that is what I believe has happened. It is a well-reported fact, admitted by both parties, that Harbaugh and Baalke don't see eye to eye on some serious matters. Those situations begin to grind and fester. My guess is that Cleveland found out about the friction and made a quiet offer that turned out to be not so quiet, and Jed and Harbaugh had to lie to cover things up.

So at this point, it is all moot. If the 49ers were really interested in getting rid of Harbaugh, it would have happened a month ago when there were still some very good coaches available. Or, they might have just decided to elevate Tomsula who has previous HC experience in Europe. I like Tomsula but prefer an offensive mind instead as HC. Hence I am glad nothing happened as I believe that would have been the best choice at the time.

In the meantime, the fact that this got out at all, along with the previous unsuccessful attempts to work out a contract, clearly points to a situation where Harbaugh is going to be under pressure to get this Super Bowl level roster into the Super Bowl and win it. Lack of experience is not an acceptable excuse with such a talented roster. There are half a dozen coaches around the league that could have done the same thing with this talent. This is a make-it-or-break it year for Harbaugh. If he wants to get paid, he has to win the Super Bowl this year. No more excuses. If he fails, and the friction continues between him and Baalke, then he may be somewhere else at the end of the current contract…or maybe sooner.

Aside from this, I know for near certainty that no deal like this would go down without coming across the desks of Haslam and Jed. Now it comes down to who do you believe? Jed or Haslam. Haslam didn't give specifics and Jed said flatly it was BS!! Looking at track record I will believe Jed any day of the week. Jim even said the 49ers were talking to us about our coaches in an interview and I don't think he was referring to himself

The most ironic thing is Harbaugh preaches keeping things in house and cuts people for conduct detrimental to the team if they don't. But he's playing the media to the max to get his contract extension. And if he doesn't he's going to be the most in demand coach when he's free.

Yes bro. Just by body language and the fact that our whole front office has been actively working towards this draft making transactions and deals seamlessly just doesn't feel like a lot of chaos is abound at 4949 Centennial. Harbaugh hasn't looked or sounded like a man resigned to leaving us or ready to pack his bags. He has sounded as if he has been all in on the upcoming season all along! I think it is just as he has said "REED--DICK--YOU--LUST"!!
