Jason LaCanfora: Clearing up some stuff from earlier - It was a false report about the nature of an alleged email from the NFLPA to player reps that quickly spread to the point where reps and players believed it to be true, including several I spoke to. Turned out to be erroneous and the NFLPA in fact sent out nothing. PA got word to players it was not true and there is no conference call or meeting set for Monday. George Atallah of the NFLPA told me "there is no timetable" for any conference or vote and the lawyers will continue to work out the remaining issues.
So .. basically they are saying the NFLPA has no plans right now to vote. They still feel they are in negotiating phase?
The financial aspects of the CBA are settled. Now they have to reach a settlement on the remaining lawsuts and exactly the extent Roger Goodell's athority to discipline players. Most players feel that he acts like a judge and jury when making decisions. They want an impartial, outside committee to appeal to.
But the NFLPA, once they recertify, will have the opportunity to change that, and other things. Question is whether they can make those changes they think they want in the three day window the owner's proposal "dictates."
The owners would have been wise to either give more time, or build more flexibility into the language, rather than simply saying "three days or it reverts to the old CBA."
True, but I understand why the owners did that. People need deadlines. It creates a sense of urgency. In most cases, that's the only way things get done.
Good point, but some added language, such as "the old CBA will be followed unless and until modified" would have removed the idea that the owners are dictating to the players for the next ten years.
