Head Coach options for the 49ers in 2011: Who do you like and why?

I'm all for Gruden.. But, even Shottenheimer would bring us the Division title, keep Manusky, bring in Wade Phillips(who will be fired too), and his sons for OC.. He's a great X's and O's guy, and although he never goes to the Super Bowl, I'd take 13-3, 14-2 any day..

What about Brian Schottenheimer? He's been getting HC looks for years but just hasn't made it yet. He's a great offensive mind, and could work wonders with the talent we have on offense. I imagine if he got the gig, he'd want to bring Bill Callahan along as O-coord (and probably O-line coach as well).

Thoughts?

He could bring in his dad as DC too..However, I wish his dad was part of the mix too..

My ideal coaching staff:

HC: Jon Gruden
- Former HC that has a SB ring on his hand as a coach. Offensive-minded and former 49er coach - WCO specific.

Offense -

OC/Asst. HC: Marc Trestman
- Highly praised offensive coach that is currently a HC in Canada. The offensive minds of Trestman and Gruden will get this ship on the right course.

QB Coach: Jay Gruden
- Current HC in the UFL, Gruden served as an offensive asst. at Tampa during Jon's tenure as HC.

WR Coach: Jerry Sullivan (same)

RB Coach: Tom Rathman (same)

TE Coach: Pete Hoener (same)

OL Coach: Mike Solari (same)

Defense -

DC: Greg Manusky (same)

DL: Jim Tomsula (same)

LB: Ted Cottrell
- Former DC but well respected 3-4 defensive specialist. Brings lots of experience to the table to bolster our LB corps.

DB: Johnnie Lynn/Vance Joseph (same)

I can only dream..LOVE THIS STAFF GEEK..Right now YOURE the greatest!!!.
Be nice if Urban meyer, Ferenz, Harbaugh, et al, could become our OC, if not our HC..I'd like: Gruden, Shottenheimer, or Harbaugh in that order..
I really like Gruden :)

If Jed York go cheap on us and hire another nobie, I'll be the first guy to bash him until he sells the team!!!
I lot of people like Jim Harbaugh cuz the man is a football genius plus his Stanford connections could potentially land us Andrew Luck.

Gruden is a bad ass and should definitely be an option if he's looking for a head coaching gig.

I've heard Cowher's name getting thrown out there too.

There may be other qualified coaches but these seem to be at the top of the list.
One thing to keep in mind, with the amount of talent and potential already on this team it wouldn't be a rebuilding effort. It would be a "get in here and win now" effort which could be a good/bad depending on the candidate (some guys like to start from scratch while others like to jump into winning situations).
So long as Jed York don't go CHEAP on us, and GET the BEST Coach out there for the 49ers - I wil not bash him constantly!

If he wants that new stadium he better get a Coach that the 49ers deserve. No more preachers please!

Somebody good.
Gruden ....he is a superbowl winning coach, offensive minded, creative and aggressive coach that will bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the team and without a doubt install a potent offense and get the best out of the Gore/Crabtree/Davis combo that SHOULD be wreaking havoc on the NFL THIS SEASON
I think the bigger question is Which head coach would come to the niners???

If gruden wants to coach would he choose us over...cowboys? Bills? Jags?Browns?panthers? i think they will all be looking for coaches which could make it even harder to land a good coach....

I think JEd has to be looking now and talking in peoples ears..if not and he waits to long we will be stuck with someone we dont want.

I would love to see GRUDEN!~~~ WCO will be back were it belongs and he will be great at developing our weakest link QB !

Read up further in this thread. Gruden is highly overrated. I think we can do better.

I love how people point to coaches that have won superbowls and say they're overrated even though they can install their own offense and actually call plays while we have a coach who doesn't know any x's and o's whatsoever and he thinks his best attribute is "i hire people smarter than me". Seriously, we're not in the position to be calling any potential HC with a ring overrated.

Gruden is overrated, and the reasons why have been repeated ad nauseum in this thread. I'm guessing you missed that, so I'll repeat them again here:

-Yes, he's won a Super Bowl, but that was in 2002. Since, he's had two trips to the postseason, losing both times in the first round. This was my issue with Shanahan. I know the 'Zone loves these guys because their coaching roots lie in San Francisco and they run the WCO, but you have to look past the name and at the FACTS.

That is, they WERE winners at one point in time, but they are not anymore.

-He has never coached up a young QB, and I question if he even has the ability to do so. He's only won with established vets (Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, and Jeff Garcia). Since we will be drafting a QB next year, this is a MAJOR red flag to me.

-His ego could be an issue. If you're so much of a personality that Al Davis (of all people) can't deal with despite you winning games then that's something else to take a look at. Also, lets not forget that he benched Garcia not because of his performance, but because he simply didn't care for the guy.

When you consider that the team immediately tanked under Griese, I would say that was probably a bad idea. The players he coached in Tampa would agree:

One thing this team does not need is another coach that lets his personal feelings interfere with the on-field product. Mike Nolan did this. Mike Singletary is doing this.

I don't know about you, but I don't care to see another egomaniac running this team.

-Furthermore, the point of my post wasn't to compare him against Singletary. That's just plain stupid. Anyone with half a brain could tell you that Gruden is a better coach than Singletary. Which isn't saying much, but still.

You're certainly welcome to your opinion but that won't change mine. Jon Gruden is not the right fit for San Francisco.
