Camp Carroll: Day 5 -- A break

The Seattle Seahawks players got the day off on Wednesday, four days into training camp.

wtf!

Carroll is an idiot. can't wait to see his ass fired after the 2011 season.

Early signs of Carroll's evolution: Seahawks have days off early in camp

ENTON, Wash. — T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Matt Hasselbeck and Lawyer Milloy have 34 seasons of NFL experience combined.

Yet they have never experienced a day off just five days into a training camp.

That's what new Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave his team on Wednesday. No practice. No meetings.

No, really.

They will get another day off on Monday. That's two full breaks over the first 10 days of camp.

Carroll is also resting veterans on a rotating basis each day.

No wonder Houshmandzadeh is smiling as though he's at a summer swim camp instead.

"This might be the best camp I've ever been a part of," Houshmandzadeh said. "You see the players' schedule. You have to work hard — but they are taking care of you."

Carroll gathered his players in the middle of the field after Tuesday's single practice, Seattle's sixth of the pre-season. He told them to be smart, stay safe, get off your feet and report back for a check-in meeting on Wednesday night.

They told him, "Thanks!"

It's the Seahawks' first score of the season.

It's also an early example of how Carroll has changed his first go-around in the NFL, as coach of the New York Jets in 1994 and of New England from 1997-99.

"We'll take it, we accept that," said Hasselbeck, who also sees Carroll's gift as a test. "I think with that comes a huge responsibility as players. It's an opportunity to do the right thing or do the wrong thing. He asked us to get off of our feet and rest and that kind of thing. Hopefully we all take advantage of it. I know I'm going to."

Arizona Cardinals tight end Ben Patrick suffered displaced knee cap

FLAGSTAFF - Cardinals starting tight end Ben Patrick suffered a displaced left knee cap Wednesday night, but he is expected to return before the start of the regular season.

An MRI revealed no ligament damage, which came as a relief to the Cardinals, who feared the worst when Patrick suffered the injury during a team session.

"It's going to be a few weeks and he should be able to return," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Obviously, it didn't look good when it happened, but we're thankful it wasn't as bad as it appeared to be."

The Cardinals don't plan on making a roster move, even though Patrick is the third tight end dealing with injuries. Anthony Becht should return soon from a sore back, and the Cardinals are hopeful that rookie Jim Dray will return soon from a quadriceps strai

Rams Coach Taking Squad To Alexander Fight

St. Louis showing love for it's own.

The coach of the St. Louis Rams, Steve Spagnuolo, has a special treat planned for his team this Saturday night. He arranged a special team bus trip to see Devon Alexander's WBC title defense against Andriy Kotelnik, live Saturday night, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The coach had this to say:

"I have a great deal of respect for what boxers go through to prepare for a fight," Spagnuolo said. "Devon is a local talent and it was important for us that he knows the entire Rams organization is behind him and wish him the best Saturday night."

Alexander is a St. Louis native, and this his first title defense in his home town.

Seahawks release Hass to make room for Pitcock

Wide receiver Mike Hass, a former Biletnikoff Award winner who spent most of last season n the Seahawks' practice squad, was released Thursday to make room on the 80-man roster for newly signed defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock.

Pitcock is on the field this morning as the Seahawks resume training camp after taking Wednesday off. The former All-American from Ohio State spent one season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007 before deciding he no longer wanted to play.

He'll attempt a comeback with a Seahawks' team that already has pretty good depth at defensive tackle, but is looking to find players wherever it can under new GM John Schneider.

Hass caught 220 passes for 3,924 yards in an outstanding career at Oregon State, but never has made it big in the NFL. He spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears, but played just one game.

He got into one game for Seattle last year, but has yet to catch his first NFL pass.

In other practice news, linebacker Aaron Curry is again not practicing as he apparently continues to be slowed by a concussion suffered in the opening day of camp.

And first-round draft pick Russell Okung continues to be absent as well as the Seahawks hit their fifth day of camp.

From what I heard from a Cards fan, is that Herman Johnson of Az isnt coming along as Whiz might be expecting. He said that Johnson may have come into camp overweight and may be on the bubble...

Oh well!

What I'm most interested in seeing is how his players treat him. I remember an article when he got hired, I think it was from espn, that talked about how he would be a pushover in the nfl. I forgot his reasons why though

High, crazy praise for Cardinals prospect
By Mike Sando

Brandon Keith was one Arizona Cardinals player I wanted to watch at training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz.

A seventh-round draft choice in 2008, Keith spent his first two NFL seasons in the shadows, appearing in only four games -- none as a starter. The Cardinals made him a starter at right tackle this offseason, but the move didn't get much attention while Arizona adapted to life without Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, Karlos Dansby and Antrel Rolle.

Keith looked good in the practices I watched, so I decided to get some thoughts on him from one of the Cardinals' defensive linemen.

"He is ready for it to be his time," defensive end Calais Campbell said. "He is a hard worker and an unbelievable talent."

An unbelievable talent? Wasn't Keith a seventh-round choice?

"I think he is going to be one of our best offensive linemen," Campbell said. "He is definitely going to be a future Pro Bowler, a Hall of Famer-type guy. That is coming from a guy who is going against him."

Whoa, wait a minute. Keith hasn't even nailed down a starting job for sure and Campbell is already booking him for Canton via Honolulu?

"He is an unbelievable talent, but then he works hard and he is smart," Campbell said. "Those three things together, and that is what offensive linemen need. I think his work ethic is going to allow him to get better and better, and he's going to go to a lot of Pro Bowls."

File it away. Campbell's assessment could make or break any future he might have in personnel work.
Russell Okung: Okung to sign by end of the weekend?

"Barring the unforeseen," NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora expects No. 6 overall pick Russell Okung to sign by the end of this weekend.
With C.J. Spiller signing Friday morning, Okung is the last remaining unsigned first-rounder. His agent and the Seahawks negotiated through the night and are still at it Friday morning. It seems that there are still some minor sticking points to iron out, but they've made steady progress this week. Okung will be inserted at left tackle almost immediately upon signing.

Training-camp report | Seahawks

Roll call

LB Aaron Curry sat out Thursday's morning practice, the fifth he's missed since suffering a head injury. DT Kevin Vickerson sat out the workout with a leg injury. Anthony Heygood, a rookie LB from Purdue, suffered a torn Achilles tendon during practice.

Position spotlight: Defensive tackles
Starters: Brandon Mebane, Colin Cole.

Backups: Kevin Vickerson, Craig Terrill, Pitcock, Jonathan Lewis.

Scouting report: Cole and Mebane are capable run-stoppers, but Mebane didn't apply the pass pressure Seattle hoped for when it moved him from nose tackle to three-technique last season. Will he improve in his second season? Vickerson is large, but he was sidelined by a groin injury in the offseason and sat out Thursday's morning practice with a sore leg. Terrill is an established veteran and Pitcock an intriguing possibility, a third-round pick just three years ago who will get his second chance at the NFL with the Seahawks.

On the bubble
Quinn Pitcock

Pos: DT Ht: 6-2 Wt. 296 College: Ohio State Yrs. pro: 2

What to know: Pitcock was a third-round pick by the Colts in 2007 who stepped away from the game after one season. He said he hit "a bump in the road" and sought help with adjusting his mentality. WR Mike Hass was cut to make room for Pitcock.

Roster chances: The Seahawks have established starters in Brandon Mebane and Colin Cole, but are in dire need of upgrading the depth of their defensive line. Pitcock was a talented prospect not that long ago. Does he have anything left?

Rams training camp: Feeley still the starter

The St. Louis Rams have one practice today, scheduled for 2 p.m. Let's hope it's a productive and injury-free affair. Tomorrow night, they'll have a 6:30 p.m. scrimmage at Lindenwood University. Anyone here at Turf Show Times planning to attend? Let us know in the comments if you are.

And now, a little news and discussion.

I guess you can't really talk about the Rams training camp without talking about the QBs. A.J. Feeley holds the starting QB spot, as you might have expected. This should come as no surprise. Spagnuolo has a documented preference for making his rookies, regardless of draft status earn their way into the starting lineup through camp. The two most notable players from last year, MLB James Laurinaitis and OT Jason Smith, were both starting in week 1 after spending considerable time in August with their respective second units. Bradford is getting reps with the first team, and I fully expect him to be the opening day starter.

The Feeley article linked above makes mention of the Rams offense improving as camp rolls into the one week mark. That's not the first time we've heard remarks about the offense's performance. It's way too early to read anything into it, but it signals to us that receivers grasp their routes well and all of the players understand the nuts and bolts of what the playbook expects of them. The Rams are establishing an identity on offense...which is more than can be said for some of their division rivals.

RB Chris Ogbonnaya is making his case in camp, earning some praise from Spags.

Seahawks Have Home Run Contest

Friday night Seattle Seahawks players participated in a home run derby in the spirit of Pete Carroll's “Always Compete” mentality. Backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst edged Rickey Foley 13 to 12 to victory.

“Foley looks a little more like a softball player than I do,” Whitehurst said. “But it’s about consistency, and I was able to hit one more than he did.”

Pete Carroll was surprised that Foley played some baseball. “I don’t know if Ricky has even played baseball. Isn’t he from Canada?”

“That’s a cliché,” Foley said. “I played a lot of baseball growing up. It was probably my best sport.”

Linebacker Will Herring, safety Lawyer Milloy, fullback Owen Schmitt, punter Jon Ryan, assistant coach Luke Butkus, wide receiver Isaiah Stanback, tackle Joe Toledo, and tight end Anthony McCoy also participated.

And since I hate baseball this is probably the first and the last baseball post on Reservation For Six.
