Jake Haener (QB)- Fresno State

Not happening. He will be taken too high for us to consider a QB.

You never know. At that time last year, I never thought Sam Howell would be a 5th rounder and Brock Purdy the last pick of the draft. Maybe Jake Haener will be there in the fifth round.

I'm sure there are other small school prospects that are just as intriguing.

I find it interesting that this is the Draft War Room thread, yet nobody did a mockup on Brock Purdy last year. Nobody apparently thought he was important enough to do a mockup on. This is just a guess on my part. I'm not really sure. But nobody paid attention to the kid until the 49ers drafted him. And the only reason people paid attention to him after the draft is because he was the last pick. After that, everyone kind of forgot about him.

That's the type of guy we should be looking at.

Mid rounds is possible, but I don't see a second round pick. As for Purdy, the Draft thread isn't very active as it is, but no one on the planet was discussing Purdy. As niner fans, we just drafted Trey Lance and so no one was looking for the next great starting QB, and backup QBs don't garner much interest when we're all looking for the next great right tackle

Understood. Very good points. Every one you make. But it still doesn't change the fact: NOBODY was discussing Purdy. Not just the 49ers. EVERY NFL team ignored him. Scouts scoffed at his potential. This is partially the reason why scouts got such a black eye this season. More than one former NFL player hinted that "scouts are lazy." Steve Smith was one. There were others.

I don't think Haener will be such a steal because everyone is discussing him. There's also the projection that the Cowboys think very highly of him. Not sure if that's true or not. It's just the whispers I've heard. I know no more than the next average armchair NFL fan.

The 49ers are heading into offseason workouts with exactly one healthy QB: Trey Lance. That can't last. Could the other QB be Josh Johnson? I suppose, but I hope not. Brock Purdy types don't walk through the door every other day. But I'm convinced that there is a QB coming out of the college ranks somewhere, anywhere, that can help. If there is any team in the NFL that has a handle on this potential, my bet is the 49ers.

Man, would love to draft Haener, He's similar to Purdy with his accuracy, intelligence, and decision making.
He's tough and competitive. He scored really high on the cognitive test Purdy excelled at. Because of Purdy, he might go too high for us with our other needs.
If he falls to the 5th or we end up getting a 4th, then yes.
We usually only roll with 2 QB's to keep another player. We Purdy hurt, Lance getting traded, and Darnold a rebuild, we might pick someone higher than I thought and keep a 3rd. I was mostly thinking a 7th rounder that would hit the practice squad, but maybe Haener if we get more picks from Lance.

If Lance gets traded, the Niners qb room needs to hit the panic button. Purdy could be out all year and Darnold could be a complete failure. I don't think picking a 4th or 5th round qb and expecting him to start as a rookie is a serious proposal. Keeping Lance and picking up someone like Haener and letting the 3 of them duke it out during the preseason with Purdy on the sideline is a rather better approach in my view..Having seen the decimation of our quarterbacks last year I simply don't understand the desire of some posters to get rid of Lance for absolute peanuts.

I'm not spending a 4/5 on any QB. I'm not moving Lance so we can a this kid and some day 2 or 3 pick. That would be bad roster development

Thank you! People are dramatic.

SOLD!

We'll see soon. We're all just discussing possibilities at this point.

Sure Lance could be showing improvement and we could be getting just day 3 pick offers. We'd keep him then. If we get a high 2nd plus another pick. He's gonne. It would allow us to recoup picks to replace what we gave up. It could mean a rt or top te

Purdy should be fine. There is a risk of being out long but likely just a few games if they play it safe with him.

We have our QB2 now in Darnold that can start a few games. He's had a rough start to his career but has been improving. We might see him do well and leave next year for a bigger contract.

Haener can serve as a backup for a few games if needed. He'd be Purdy lite if he needed to play. He could get the ball to the playmakers.
Then he could be a good backup next year being able to keep the same playbook if we have to play the backup.

They should hit the panic button based on what?

They should hit the panic button based on what?

Based on having one quarterback recovering from injury, recovery period indeterminate, form on return likewise, and the other qb a bust who may, may be able to do better for us. May. And that is it. And if that doesn't justify the panic button in your view, then you have no idea of the importance of the quarterback in today's NFL.
