Solomon Thomas--Stanford

If Thomas turned a Kerrigan type player, I'd be very satisfied. Ryan Kerrigan is quietly one of the best edge rushers in the NFL.

Yep, but Thomas may be even better. He also brings value as an inside pass rusher unlike Kerrigan.

LOL..a 296 pound NT.

That's as crazy as wanting a 274 point 3 tech. Oh wait.

Who needs to stop the run??

He is listed at 6'3 310lbs. Thats a lot of weight on a 6'3 frame.

Ian Williams has been around 290-300 pounds his entire career. A lot of teams are relying on smaller, quicker linemen in the middle. Prior to being in Miami, most of Mitchell's snaps were at 1 technique. I certainly expect him to get plenty of snaps at nose tackle. Mitchell around 310 certainly isn't small.

Size does not equate stopping the run, see 2016 49ers.
In the end, once we see our guys line up, we will know in short order who belongs where. Alternatively, a guy like blair, he is best in one place, mabye only one slot. So he stays there. But we will be darn lucky to get 4 or 5 guys all matched up to their optimum positions. NIce thing about John lynch having extensive DB experience He can watch the DL and if someone doesn't fit in his slot , Lynch will know. This is a huge advantage over baalke. Kyle will KNOW if someone is misplaced on the DL.

Well, Saleh should too, but Lynch wiht his playing experience plus longevity can tell if we are out of balance or jsut about right. Probably it will be pretty easy for us to see if someone is in the wrong slot. The D just won't work. We know we have solomon as a lock. If we can move up , and still get one of solomon, allen, Foster , or williams, then that is a good trade back as long as we get one of the top 4 upper tier guys....plus a high 2nd rd pick. Makes our 2600 pt slot more like what it should be if we move back no further than say 6. Also, since Shalyn already fixed the QB slot with vet/vet, we don't have to worrry about drafting a potential FR QB in the #2 slot, where the qbs are all worthy of somewhere in rd 2. That was a great move allowing us to take the bpa of the IMPACT players we need. Solomon seems to fit best, and if there are no takers for a trade back, then Solomon is not chopped liver. The guy is the 2nd best player in the draft. Shifting position from first down to second and again on 3rd down, may be what it takes. But whether we get the exact right guy, i feel certain Lynch' and Saleh will figure out who goes where ...and when.

Jay Ratliff was also an undersized NT for the Cowboys for 8 seasons playing at 297 lbs.

Who were our DEs last year?

I don't know why I'm replying but Buckner, Dial, Armstead until he went down, Blair, TJE and Chris Jones by season's end. The LDE position remains the same as the prior scheme as mentioned.

Yea pointless discussion. Sounds like we're both on the same page with wanting Thomas. Just arguing about positions. I do see him as drafting the same position three years in a row. 3 guys who are best fit as 3-4 DEs. Essentially a DT/DE tweener. Regardless I still want him. He's a big upgrade over Armstead. Armstead never took over games the way Thomas did on his own. Who knows, maybe he can be an edge. If not then we still got a solid player with extremely high upside on our line.

Saying we still have armstead isn't reason enough. Can't forget last season... having the worst run d in history.
Not seeing the best fit with current personnel and Thomas.

Leo: Aaron Lynch (Tank Carradine)
DT: Arik Armstead (Solomon Thomas?)
DT: Earl Mitchell (Quinton Dial)
DE: DeForest Buckner
Sam: Ahmad Brooks (Eli Harold)

Do you expect Armstead to play all snaps? He's played about 30 percent of snaps each of his first two years.
