Solomon Thomas--Stanford

A bit too early for that, but its a logical destination given the need for a quality edge player and Thomas is arguably the 2nd best player in this drat behind Garrett. His combine performance pretty much sealed it imo. If the 49ers don't go QB at #2, chances are very good they pick Thomas.

Ideally they would acquire Thomas and an edge guy like Charles Harris, spend the rest of the draft on the offense. Thomas and Harris would go a long ways towards improving the pass rush and making this a more sound, talented defense overall.

Agree. I'm in favor of Thomas at 2nd overall, and then the best pure edge guy available at 34.

For the record my argument wasn't based on position just the fact that he's a stud and would help our run and pass D a ton.

Phoenix has a way with words lol but basically that's what I was trying to get across as well

Yea, some could argue that there are safeties or a CB who is the second best player. But this is a total rebuild and there's no way Shanny/Lynch are content with just patching up the worst run d in history. They know they gotta do something big. And of course the Stanford connection. Solomon has perfect behavior and leadership, total Lynch guy.

Part of the whole bad run D was having Bow and Armstrong out. If Bow is back to 100% we aren't getting run over like last year.

I agree. That was a big part. Along with the line getting bullied. On paper going into the season our d sounded pretty good. Problem is we relied on a bunch of injury prone guys.

What? Week 2 we gave up 176 yards to NC (over 100 to fozzy), week 3 130 to Seattle (micheal over 100), 200 yards week 4 to Dallas (zeke 140 yards). Those were games with Bow. AA hasn't proven to be good at stopping the run regardless of injury.

Oh s**t great points. For some reason I was thinking Bow went down in the second game.

Edit: mixed him up with ray ray

The issue is we don't have a run stuffer on that DL...buck while I love and improved as the yr went on wasn't stuffing the run and AA hasn't proven anything. Thomas brings pass rush and run stopping ability...if we can't trade down I think it's a very good fall back lol.

Get that quick twitch pass rusher in the 2nd or hope lynch/tank/Eli can lose some weight...it would be a hell of a draft if we can away with Solomon and a Leo pass rusher with the first two picks, they move around with our 8 other picks to get offense.

We started the season with 4 hard opponents. When teams got easier I doubt the numbers would be that high with Bow and Ray Ray. We also had the D on the field too much thanks to Kelly.

You're blaming AA yet the guy had a bum shoulder. He should've been shut down earlier, that's not his fault.

And that is my main concern about Armstead. If he sucks against the run then he is nothing but a rotational player in this defense anyways.

Do you have any idea what he's capable of without a bum shoulder? I don't. Is his upside high enough to pass on someone like Thomas who is a far better prospect than Armstead was?
If by no other measure, the level of activity in this thread, the Watson thread, Trubisky thread, and the Kirk Cousins thread show where the Niner fans think we're going with our pick. Most mock drafts I've seen either have us taking Trubisky or Thomas, and there still remains the possibility of trading for Cousins.

I've been one of the more positive posters on AA in here...but he hasn't done anything yet that's a fact. Maybe he will be good but he hasn't done squat yet. He's not a ideal fit for a 4-3 and wasn't great vs the run in college. You say we played 4 hard teams, who gives a s**t it's the NFL you need to do your job. And please don't tell me fozzy whittaker and christen Micheal and that horrible OL in Seattle are good.

Stop making excuses

I read Rappaport from NFL network loved the idea that Shanahan and Lynch wont trade their 2nd pick for Cousins bc next year he will be a niner through free agency, get a great player at 2 and have Hoyer be the starter with Barkley or a rookie back up this yr..
