I think the question people have when trying to find holes in Garrett's game is how much was due to injury and how much is due to just not giving max effort.

I think Garrett is the best player in this draft due to the mix of everything but it wouldn't hurt to see more fire out of him and it wouldn't shock me if Thomas was the better pro 5 years from now.
Lombardi was on 95 7 the game today talking about the Niners choices at number two. he said he would take Jonathan Allen if Medicals check out

When asked about Solomon Thomas he said he loves the player but is confused as to why he is being mocked to the Niners so frequently, as he sees, and I'm paraphrasing here, roster redundancy. he sees Thomas as an edge contain player for base downs and an interior rusher in nickel, in which she also sees Buckner and, to a lesser extent, Armstead as being an interior rusher he also questions if Thomas has the necessary length to be an effective one Gapper in the NFL full time.

Obviously this should not be taken as gospel but I am inclined to agree with his assessment. Thomas is certainly an upgrade to our DL, but we can literally upgrade every single position on our roster. There are bigger, more impactful upgrades to be had at 2.

Thomas might just vanish in the middle of the Line. i don't think he's the Sapp type dominant player. but he could benefit from the other guys being on the DL too

Aldon Smith wasn't a high motor guy ethier and we didn't need him to run sideline to sideline like a LB

But if having the choice between the two..it has to be garrett

Upgrading our DL has a major effect on the rest of the defense. Armstead still has to prove he's a starter. With only Buckner being a proven player you add talent on the DL and not worry about redundancy.

This isn't a RB or QB or other positions where you really only have one guy out there.

More studs you get on the DL the harder it is for the OL to block them. It allows other players to make plays.

Outside of QB or WR you can argue a rookie isn't necessarily an upgrade over a vet.

Safety - Jimmie Ward/Reid/Tartt
Corner - Robinson/Redmond etc
RB - Hyde...if he's healthy he's not just giving his job away.
LB - Bowman
etc...

I agree just pointing out that we've seen plenty of cases of lesser talented or physically talented players having better careers due to their drive, passion and work ethic.

Tom Brady is the perfect example of this.
Jerry Rice being better than Randy Moss is another.

Rice wasn't a slouch in the athletic department himself but down a clear notch physically/athletically/speed wise from Moss and yet he just worked harder.

Similar situation.
If we don't draft Thomas at 2 where does he most likely go?

yeah no doubt drive is the heart of all great players. a lot of things can spark that drive and a lot of things can put that fire out

Off topic but another interesting thing he said was that Bill Walsh refused to draft a wide receiver early until he felt the rest of the team was completed. I thought that was fascinating.

Chicago at 3? I could see Fangio having a major crush on him.

Redmond hasn't shown anything.
Ward has shown nothing at safety worth a draft bypass
Tartt hasn't done anything great

Can Reid stay consussiom free at SS?
Can Tartt actually be trusted to start?
We have major ? at CB.

Adams would be the best SS on the roster
Hooker would be the best FS on the roster
The top 3 CB's would most likely start day 1

In regards to Blair Michael Bennett didn't half the combine numbers as most prospects did hence why he went undrafted yet who's the all pro? Sometimes people forget that alot of these college kids haven't been thru as good of a strength and conditioning program. So you may see it as them working with sub par ability but really they just were just behind the curve a bit. If you look at Blair's scouting report you'd see he was carrying bad fat. Nothing that can't be worked off though. Blair is a very promising piece you just don't ever bet on that. If he earns a starting gig then he earned it.

That's an assumption on all 3 of those. You don't know that. There have been plenty highly rated rookies who couldn't beat out vets right away.

The corners on the team and the safeties have arguably shown more than Armstead has so the point was valid.

That's why you don't worry about stuff like that. Draft bPA within reason and let the guys battle it out. Best ones rise to the top.
