Solomon Thomas--Stanford

Top defensive grades:

DI Solomon Thomas, 92.5

Stanford's ability to pressure Mitch Trubisky and force turnovers was the key to the Cardinals' victory. DT Solomon Thomas had an amazing performance in the interior of Stanford's defense, accumulating five hurries and a sack rushing the passer, while also forcing five stops in run defense. When not always applying pressure on the quarterback, Thomas consistently beat his blocker assigned to him on pass protection.

I completely agree with you on Thomas. I saw numerous examples of him missing tackles, giving up on a play a tad too early, watching teammates tackle a dude, etc. I didn't really see the instinct and fire I would expect from a DL pick that high. This is just one example of his tape, but I wasn't super impressed.

Guy not making every single sack = lack of fire and instinct.

What a joke.

I think that if youre criticizing Thomas for the UNC game, then your standards might just be impossibly high. It is one of the better single game performances Ive seen from a draft prospect in the past few years.

I also wanted Carriker over Willis in the 2007 draft. I work in finance and not football for a reason.
Watched it again.

Thomas was dominant as an interior rusher. I really liked him when he lined up over center like on the last play of the game. He made most of his plays as an interior rusher. When he lined up wide over the RT he made 2 very nice reads on screens where he diagnosed the play immediately but be lacked the speed to bend the edge and used a bull rush almost exclusively.

I really like Thomas as a 3 tech. He does remind me of Cowboy Smith with his power and tenacity. I didn't see many plays where he wasn't doubled which would mean our LEO or Buckner would be 1 on 1. I don't like him on the edge in an odd front on passing downs. He just doesn't have the speed needed to play out there vs NFL tackles.

Put him inside as a NT on passing downs or a 3 tech on base and look out.

But boy oh boy was I impressed by Trubisky. His receivers dropped about 6 passes including 2 on the TD drive in the end zone and his pocket awareness is phenomenal. His ability to slide and move in the pocket is what Aaron Rodgers does and he made some beauty NFL throws. His deep ball wasn't great but man, he looked good. He does stuff in the pocket that established NFL Pros do. How good is this guy going to be with more experience and coaching??

It was also clear that Shanahan was at Stanford pro day to see McCaffery. Skipping that bowl game though...man. I don't know.

Thomas was a wrecking ball inside the tackle box (and that last play at Nose? are you kidding me?). Just a dominant performance.

Call-me-Mitchell's subtle moves in the pocket were really impressive. His accuracy with the game on the line was even more impressive. His receiver's inability to catch the ball with the game on the line was the least impressive lol.

I disagree actually. I thought he gave quite a tell about how he feels about Thomas in this video. It happens almost immediately, but watch Kyles face light up the moment Thomas' name is mentioned. Maybe I'm misreading it, maybe I'm wrong. I'm married, so I'm used to being wrong.

right leads me to believe some people in here aren't very realistic with their idea of a DL. I can throw some film up of Myles missing tackles, giving up on plays, and getting handled by double teams this yr.

BUT because the media has pumped him up so much people in here think he's gonna be the next Lawrence Taylor. He's good but not every single play is a sack this is real life not madden smh.

This is the first I'm hearing that Garrett didn't get a sack on every play. Is this true? Can someone confirm?

I mean the way people talk about him in here you'd think so lol...crazy talent no doubt, but people's expectations are crazy up in here.
Thing is we don't have a QB and Mitch looked awful good in that game. He was poised and calm. He has great feet. NFL ready accuracy and pocket awareness. He can make all the throws. I was really impressed. That last drive was fantastic. He looks like the gunslinger Shanahan wants. He looks like Cousins but with a stronger arm..

He made some mistakes but coach him up and I think he will be an All-pro.
The thing I like about Trubisky is he is the Prototype. If a machine were to make a QB they would make Trubisky. Size. Speed. Calmness. He wants to win. He has it all..flawless Mechanics. His pocket awareness and ability to slip and step up in the pocket is amazing considering he only started 13 games.

The best part is he doesn't have to start now. Give him a year. Hell, give him 2 to learn his footwork, dropping back from center, reading blitzes.

Put him and Shanahan in the same room and on the practice field for a year or two and the sky is the limit.
