Zay Jones, WR, ECU

Browse 49ers books and videos
Interesting fact:

Zay Jones' father is former ECU linebacker Robert Jones. Robert Jones was a Consensus All-American LB at ECU back in the early 90s. He was a first round draft pick for the Cowboys and was named NFC Rookie of the Year.

Numerous sources had Zay as the best WR on the field yesterday on Day One of Senior Bowl. Interesting development

He would do really well as a slot receiver here.

150 catches and only 8 of them were TDs and he only averaged 11 yards a catch. Gross

Great possession Wr at worst I'd say.

Right. Against WHO? I'm not even trying to be a dick. I haven't really watched him. Is he a decent player beating up on crappy teams, or is he getting it done if/when they match up with a top program? He doesn't look big or fast to me, just looks like a competitor with good technique and great hands.

To be honest, the same was said about Jerry Rice...Just sayin

""It wouldn't surprise me if he somehow willed himself to grow those three inches his senior year," McGeoghan said. "I can just see this kid sitting in his bed, saying, 'I want to grow every day.'"".

""I'm sure [NFL scouts] are going to want to see him run that 4.4 [40-yard dash] and maybe break more tackles," McGeoghan said. "But the thing with this guy is if you tell him he needs to do something, he'll do it."".

One of many things Rice had was a tremendous work ethic and will; Seems this kid might have that same kind of drive.

He looked the part to me on the limited footage I seen.

Numerous sources say he dominated day 2 and 3. Beating DBs on all levels of field. He is legit. In a weak WR class, he is shaping up as a 2nd round prospect.

FEISTY is the word !!!

Late 3rd early 4th..
Saw him being interview and kid was super humble giving more props to other guys that were there than himself.

He definitely made himself money with the showing on the field and the off the field stuff. You love guys like that in the locker room. Good kids who you can tell enjoy the game and look to try to improve their game watching other people.

He's also the brother of Cayleb Jones, who was drafted last year

Right. Against who? Were his 73 and 69 yard games against good programs whose names we'd recognize? Was he just beating up on tiny programs when he had his big games? Is anyone else concerned that he plays small schools and only averages 10 yards per catch? WRs are hard to project into the NFL. A small school possession guy with average size and speed is even more difficult, imo.

I don't hate him. I don't even know him. I'm just leery of using production to assess a player, because no player, ESPECIALLY a WR, operates in a vacuum. Other than the hands, I don't see any traits that stand out in any particular way.

He beats up on bad teams for sure, but still shows well vs better teams.

22 catches vs South Carolina
10 catches vs Virginia Tech

His former teammate Justin Hardy put up big numbers in the same offense and ended up being drafted in the 4th. I can see 4th/5th round for Zay as well.

He will be playing at Senior Bowl. You can see more of him there.

Zay just lit up the Senior Bowl.

Wait for it.....

Told you so.
Going to be interesting to see how he performs at the combine. I don't expect him to post any overwhelming numbers, tho. He looks like a much better football player than athlete.
