2017 Wide Receivers

Penn State WR Chris Godwin's Combine workout places him in the 89th percentile of athleticism at the position, according to Zach Whitman.

At 6-foot-1 and 209 lbs, Godwin produced a top five workout among receivers. We knew Godwin shined as a contested catch receiver, converting those opportunities at a higher rate than any pass catcher over the last two years, according to Matt Harmon. Now add on Godwin's athleticism and his age (21 years old during rookie year) and you have yourself a second round pick at the latest.

Good at contested catches? That works in Shanahans offense, never saw Penn St play last couple of years.
Mike Williams or Corey Davis. Can't go wrong. Just move back to pick up more picks and pick them at a reasonable spot, definitely not #2
Oklahoma State WR Jhajuan Seales ran the 40-yard dash between 4.37 seconds and 4.42 seconds at the program's pro day on Thursday.

Tip of the hat to Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline for passing along these numbers. In addition to his sterling run through the 40-yard dash, Seales logged a massive 41.5-inch vertical jump and a strong broad jump of 10-foot-4. He also surprised by measuring taller than expected, checking into pro day festivities at 6-foot-1, 206 pounds. A likely undrafted free agent unless he can find some late Day 3 love, Seales caught 37 passes for 615 yards (16.6 yards per reception) and four touchdowns this past season.

Seems like a good UDFA fit for niners
Okay, I think I've looked at enough WRs. Still a lot more out there but I don't have the time. My breakdown by type:

Traditional outside WR (adequate size and speed, separation, route running, hands):
1. Corey Davis
2. John Ross
3. Mike Williams
4. Zay Jones
5. JuJu Smith Schuster
6. Chris Godwin
7. Chad Hansen
8. Fred Ross
9. Isaiah Ford
10. Amba Etta-Tawo
11. Travin Dural
12. Darreus Rogers

Your big target outside WR (big frame, catch radius, outmuscles DBs for the ball)
1. Mike Williams
2. Josh Reynolds
3. Malachi Dupre
4. Jamari Staples
5. Jalen Robinette

Your deep threat WR (go deep! Slower speed permitted if also with long frame to win battle deep)
1. John Ross
2. K.D. Cannon
3. Dede Westrbrook
4. Josh Malone
5. Mack Hollins

Your joystick/playmaker (quick twitch athlete, get the ball in their hands anyway you can)
1. John Ross
2. Curtis Samuel
3. Carlos Henderson
4. ArDarious Stewart
5. Keevan Lucas
6. Isaiah McKenzie

Your slot WR (excellent feet, cuts, ability to sell routes, small area quickness, great hands)
1. Stacey Coley
2. Ryan Switzer
3. Cooper Kupp
4. Taywan Taylor
5. Travis Rudolph
6. Gabe Marks
7. Keevan Lucas

We've got something like 12 WR's on the roster right now. I doubt we draft one any time sooner than day 3 unless someone seriously drops.

We have Garcon and Kerley, the only "regular" starters. Most of the rest of our WRs are TC fodder.

Goodwin will be a situational player with limited impact.

I'd say we could definitely use another starting caliber outside WR, not to mention some development players to take over.

Adding someone like ArDarious Stewart or Carlos Henderson would also be a good idea to replace Ellington.

Awesome awesome. Thanks a lot. One question - why didn't Stringfellow make your board? I see him as a later round steal. But seeing as he's not on your board at all, I'm questioning everything about my decision making.

Garcon, Kerley and Goodwin are the only guys they have any sort of real commitment to. The rest could just be camp bodies if superior options are found. What they still lack is a #1 type WR.
Gimme Corey Davis, Ryan switzer, and Josh reynolds...can see these guys as huge contributors in shanny offense. Wouldn't be mad at juju smith-schuster learning behind Garcon either if we miss out on Corey davis. Would want to also sign a big speedy outside x receiver if that was the case...maybe Eric Rodgers comes back a healthy surprise?
If Garrett is gone, I'm on board with moving back and taking Corey Davis. Too bad Ross has those injury concerns.
One thing is for sure, and that's Kyle loves his speed.

I think his favorite category to pick from would be the "joystick/playmaker" from above.

Seems like you're completely underrating Mike Williams in a few categories like traditional outside WRs and deep threats. Traditionally the biggest WR on the team plays outside if he has any speed. There are allot more 50/50 type jump ball deep threats in the NFL then the under 6'0 speedsters. Davis is a draft crush cause I see him as a combo of OBJ and Owens. Williams is that WR you hate to face at the end of a close game when defenses are being too cautious and it all comes down to a 50/50 ball.

Personally I'd be happy with Davis or Williams at #2, then McCaffrey, Samuel, or A. Jackson in the second then a backup QB or edge rusher and all the LBs left in the draft with a late round RB from a small school that went unnoticed. Is that too much to ask?

The more I look at davis the more I don't care for him.

Davis can't get separation from low level CB's. That despite him supposedly being a good route runner.

Corey davis at #2 (or anywhere before the 3rd) would be a huge mistake.
Davis isn't a #2 but 3rd round is underrating him. Probably a late first round is fair, but he'll grow into a very reliable NFL receiver. Will become a great red zone target.

Mentally the kid is strong and that alone will take him far. Rarely drops a catch as well.
