Punter / kicker hybrid?

In the video that Jcool posted, he kicked a 66 yard field goal and had two punts with 4.98 hang time. He also kicked a kickoff to the field goal post.

All of this was what looked like it was a kicking academy, but interesting just the same.

Traded back, and have a good chance to replace Lee who has shown signs of deterioration. Plus we added a 7th. That's sounds like a win to me. Land our player and an extra pick. Trader Trent at it again!

Are you really serious. Put down the KoolAid

Yes even kickers and punters need to be drafted. Who'd of thunk it right? All I know is his avg was better than Lees last year. Don't be a homer, all three phases bro!

Andy Lee has been kind of sucking the last couple years and makes a crap load of money, but seriously a punter right now!?

Lee average 46.8 yards last year, 46.2 for career

another Ray Guy 4.98

If dude can be a kicker and a punter, saving a roster spot and being very good at both, it's a great forward thinking pick.

Saving a roster spot doesn't work. If the guy gets hurt during a game, the team is screwed.
Take Ifo and La' el

Cutting Andy Lee who currently counts $2,550,000 against our cap with $1,000,000 (dead money) and $1,550,000 (cap savings)

Maybe this dude can do both?

That's what I'm thinking. That would be genius. And save a spot for a guy we want on the roster.

That would certainly be some outside-the-box thinking right there...like converting Miller from an OLB to FB. Sooooo

That's never going to happen! My guess is he doesn't want to say anything to piss off lee but this guy is way more talented at this stage in their respective careers. I would suspect for Lee to lose his job outright in camp!

With punters and kickers, you either go undrafted, or if you really want a guy, you draft them in the 7th. If you LOVE a guy you draft them in the 6th, maybe....

Just can't support taking a punter in the 5th. The 5th is the PRIME round to scoop up mid round guys that dropped, or jump out in front on late round guys you really like.

So far, this draft has been a roller coaster. I was pissed yesterday that they passed on all the WRs and RBs we needed, but then they pulled off that 4th round and got great looking players. So who knows... maybe we'll still get an intriguing ILB prospect, line depth, or a KR/PR in the 6th and 7th.

All that said, I would have kept our original pick in the round and drafted JJ Nelson.
This........sweet Jesus man!

Sounds right until you consider Baalke's need to save the 7th round for IR candidates. That moves everyone up and kickers are then 5/6 round picks. Just a difference in philosophy.

That's a fair point... But I think I'd rather take those IR flyers a round early. I mean, it just comes down to who you think is more likely to get snagged by another team. I think other teams are probably more likely to grab a talented, but hurt, position player than a punter. But hey.... I'm sure when this 6'6" Pinion guy picks up the place kick and charges through tackles for a TD we'll all be high fiving and loving the pick. Until then..... COME ON, MAN!!!

Lots of complaining over a late round picks. Unlikely most of them make the roster... for most teams. This has been a good draft overall.

Not at all...they have Haynes to the rescue!
So, I know we don't need another RB after taking Mike Davis... But I really like this Josh Robinson kid, and he's still on the board.

Maybe we can pick him up undrafted or something. But I could see him coming out of nowhere to be a quality NFL player if he lands in the right situation.

Baalke is a God, never question him

Hmm...yes, I can see that! But now they have to add IR and fellons to their 7th round...so maybe move IR to round 6, keep fellons in round 7 and P/Ks to 5th?
Baalke has done a very good job of addressing roster loss at least one year ahead in the draft. So okay, a punter with a big leg that will allow some salary savings by cutting Lee. Okay sure. But in the 5th round when you have failed to address the backup swing OT spot (for years!) as well as ILB where we've lost 2 starter-level players (including a would've been HoFer). Me no likey.

That said, this draft has been pretty solid in keeping with the plan. Armstead to help replace Smith/Dockett in a year. Tartt to replace Bethea in a year. Harold to hedge our bets at OLB with Aldon's contract year and Brooks being, well, Brooks. You draft Bell as one of the more intriguing TE prospects in this draft, Mike Davis who sounds a bit Gore-ish according to scouting reports, and Smelter as the potential Boldin replacement. That is a quality draft to me.

I just don't like the idea of Erik Pears being THE backup at both OT spots, as well as potentially starting at LG (ugh). It's better than relying on Boone to slide out in a pinch, but not by much. Then Wheeler and/or Bishop being first off the bench at ILB? I hope Moody or Skov can make a jump.

Just remember, fellow Faithful, that CB was never high on the list of priorities going into this draft. They addressed that spot 3 times last draft as well as with signing Wright and resigning Cook.

Very possible but the good news is that he CAN be a quality PK as well should the 40-year old Dawson go down. So...yeah...
