If we can get a good Free Agent OL and then go OL again at 16/17 then I'm all for getting Spiller at 13. OL is priority #1

What was our success on third down?

Why did we go all spread-and-let-Alex-throw-the-cover-off-the-ball?

4.84 yds/carry...take out the Seattle game, and what does that go down to?

Frank is Frank, and when our line did manage to open something up, he took advantage more times than not. But did you not see those far, far too many two-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust runs? (OK, no more hyphens, promise)

If that 4.84 had been real, we simply would have given it to Gore every play and had him follow Baas/Heitmann/Rachal down the field for a score every series.

Which was Iron Mike's original plan.

Didn't work.

Our line wasn't good enough.

We were 8 and 8. (See? No hyphen!)

Had trouble running.

Let's draft to improve our offensive line and let Gore and Spiller do their thing!

Except he won't be there when we choose.

DRAT!

With a stronger OLine, Gore would be getting 5 to 6 yards per pop. He displayed breakaway speed this year and he looked very sharp. Dude missed 3 games and was still a top back.

______

I think everybody agrees we need some OL help, particularly RT. Also that Gore is a top flight back in this league. No doubt about that.

But we don't need to draft two first-round o-linemen and, quite honestly, I'm having a hard time seeing the difference in talent level between the RT that could be available at 13 and 16. However, there aren't very many RB's like Spiller that come around. And on top of that, there aren't many that come out that have his return ability either.

So, if Spiller is there at 13, I think we have to take him. Then go nuts on OL at pick 16 and in the 2nd round. I guess I just don't see how we are "worse off" in that scenario compared to other possibilities. Seems pretty ideal to me.

Guards don't carry 1st round value. The reality is if we pass on OL at 13 for Spiller or anybody else for that matter and then draft Williams or Buluga at 17 we passed on one guard prospect Mike Iupati.

Forgive me for not jumping off the bridge.

Not sure what your point is? Never said we had to go Guard in round 1.

Get a Guard in Free Agency and either Williams or Bulaga at 16/17.

Spiller might make a little sense if the OC had any creativity. As of right now, I haven't seen any indication of that possibility. Unless Raye plans to use him as a slot receiver, motioning in and out of the backfield, then the pick is a waste. I' don't think Raye has the vision to do this. Meanwhile, if the niners drafted Bulaga and then Iupati they would have one the best run blocking lines in the league. That fits better with Singletary's and Raye's personalities.

If Raye were going to be around for the next ten years, you might be persuading me.

He's not.

Heck, I don't think Iron Mike is going to be around for the next ten years, and I've got nothing against him other than 8 and 8.

A young, speedy. break away back just might be around for the next ten years, and productive for most of that. We must improve our O-line that draft, but Coffee and Robinson are not the change of pace that a better-than-Sproles back like Spiller can provide. Spiller at thirteen (but remember, he won't be there, so you may get your scenario anyway), and best available OT for our 16/17 pick.

You are right about Raye, but a Spiller pick would be useless for this year at least (a returner can be had latter in the draft). As for Spiller, I actually don't see him getting drafted as early as people think, he is not an every down back. People keep saying Seattle will take him, but I don't see it because they could always wait until the second to pick up a guy like Johnathan Dwyer or Anthony Dixon, or Ryan Mathews in the third. All of these guys fit the mold of every down running backs, whereas Spiller is a complimentary back.

I don't agree that Spiller can't be an every down back.

Spiller: 5'11", 195 lbs.

Billy Sims: 6' 0", 212 lbs. (Spiller reminds me so much of Sims)

Barry Sanders: 5' 8", 200 lbs. (Spiller reminds me even more of Sanders)

Watch his moves. If they can't hit you, they can't hurt you, or stop you, or win against you. Chris Johnson and DeSean Jackson (yeah, and Devon Hester and... well, you get the picture) proved again this year what even Ancient Al still is able to cling to: speed kills.

Drafting Spiller is a bet, a bet we might lose. But if we win that bet, we win big, big time. He might not be the next Barry Sanders.

But I'm willing to take that risk. Speed kills. Moves kill. Football savvy kills. I think Spiller has it all.

We need to improve our o-line to be competitive.

But let's get younger and faster, first.

I'm not the only one who says this, most of the draft sites I have seen say the same thing. Mind you, in a system like Philadelphia's I think he could be awesome.

No never said that. We need to draft for the line for sure, just pointing out stats MM had on his blog that show we ran for very positive yards up the gut.

granted he is not a 30 carry a game work horse type runner, he can run between the tackles, give you 15-20 carries and 4-5 catches
