2011 49ers Free Agents - Be Ready!!!

Enjoy this year because after this season we will have to deal with having 14 free agents (7 current starters). This next offseason will be the toughest one in a long time. Recently, we haven't had many big free agents to worry about and that kind of goes along with not having great players. We can't keep all of them. Hopefully we sign the right ones and possibly tag one of them (assuming the CBA is intact) to keep as many as possible. What are your thoughts?

Alex Smith - Depends on the season but hopefully he resigns cheap if we want him
Vernon Davis - Should be signed first and foremost
Dashon Goldson - I'd prefer to resign him, Reggie has looked good but injury prone
Aubrayo Franklin - I think he goes elsewhere, hopefully RJF will be ready
Manny Lawson - If he doesn't lower demand he is probably gone
Ray McDonald - Sign for cheap... should compete with Soap for LDE
Takeo Spikes - Sign for vet min. as leader for Bowman, possibly starter

David Baas - Unless we see him as future at C no need to resign
Tony Wragge - Versatile vet but unless he signs for min. we probably can't resign
Karl Paymah - Could live without resigning... we will see how he does this year
Demetric Evans - Probably gone after this year
Brian Westbrook - Probably gone after this year... Dixon should be ready
Barry Sims - Probably gone or just let walk since he would be 36 next season
Jason Hill - Probably gone anyways

Please correct me if you see someone who isn't on here or shouldn't be on here.

VD will sign before the end of the year.

If Baas proves to be our C of the future we'll get him extended easy. I

f Westbrook provides the type of dynamic we want in a #2 scat back type guy we'll have no problem getting him for another year or 2.

J.Hill/Sims/Wraage/Paymah/Evans/R.McDonald will not be able to command big $ bottom line we want them we got them and I'm glad these guys have pressure to perform of a contract year. A few of them won't even make the team.

T.Spikes will sign for the vet min or close to it and so will M.Lewis if we want them back

Lawson is probably as good as gone but I already like our young OLB's and won't be too upset if he goes espeically if he gets big $$

A.Smith has proven he wants to be here before if he performs we will have no problem at all signing him to a long term deal

out of everyone I'm only worried about Goldston I think he's going to be a real star for years to come. With that said we have 3 other young safties in Mays/R.Smith/C.Taylor so it wouldn't necessaryily kill us

We have proven to be good w/the cap lately and have made mostly wise decisions and have extended the guys we want. We have a good group that do have Long term deals like Willis/Staley/Crabtree/J.Smith/A.Davis/Iupati/Gore/Dixon/Spencer/Mays/Bowman/
RJF/
and others like K.Williams/P.Adams/C.Taylor/K.Mitchell/D.Zeigler with flexibility

this roster is being handled well and although we may lose 1 or 2 tops we will be fine.

A few agent-related thoughts I posted in NT but relevant here also.

Good:
VD and ABF share the same agent Todd France, so I think that helps ABF's chances of staying since most of us are very optimistic about VD staying.
We've had many smooth dealings with Goldson's agent Rosehaus, from rookie contracts to Gore's current deal.

Bad:
Manny's agent Jon Feinsod also represents Revis and Vincent Jackson, two high profile holdouts at this moment.

i wonder which player will get franchised

That's a good question. If we decide to let Franklin go maybe it is Lawson. Hopefully Davis is resigned by then. Goldson as well... it it comes down to Lawson or Goldson I say Goldson but it could all change this year. It's going to be really interesting to see what happens after the season. For all we know there could be no football and this won't be an issue.

Some possibilities.

Alex Smith - only if he has a good season (3,000 yards, 25+ TD's, pro-bowl alternate, etc). Would be wise to franchise him and see if he could repeat the performance one more year.

Vernon Davis - if contract talks hit a snag.

Dashon Goldson - like Alex needs to have a big year. May ask for big money (see Antrell Rolle) leading to franchise tag.

Aubrayo Franklin - repeat tagged. Contract talk hits snag.
after cuts here is the updated list.

QB Alex Smith(UFA)
RB Brian Westbrook(UFA)
TE Vernon Davis(UFA)
C David Baas(UFA)
C/OG Tony Wragge(UFA)
OT Barry Sims(UFA)
OT Chris Patrick(ERFA)

DE Demetric Evans(UFA)
NT Aubrayo Franklin(UFA)
OLB Brandon Long(ERFA)
OLB Martail Burnett(ERFA)
OLB Diyral Briggs(ERFA)
CB William James(UFA)
FS Dashon Goldson(UFA)
SS Michael Lewis(UFA)
I'd really like to see the Niners keep Lawson, but I just don't see it. Lets say Manny doesn't improve his pass rushing this year, the Niners will want a starting OLB with more pass rush ability. On the other hand, if Manny DOES improve and gets double digit sacks his price tag will go WAY up thus making it difficult to resign him.

It's a little hard to think Lawson WILL improve his pass rushing stats this season. Laboy and Brooks will get the majority of snaps on passing downs. Briggs should also get mentioned, but he be inactive on gameday assuming everyone stays healthy. Lawson AND Haralson both should be put on notice. Lawson can do everything EXCEPT get after the QB. The only thing Haralson could do was get after the QB, but his play has fallen off. The Niners could easily have new starting OLBs in 2011

Here is how I see it, we have 2 good OLB's in Manny and Parys. Not great, not excellent, not Pro Bowl level guys......at this point. Both offer different skill sets but Manny is more versatile. With Parys playing a lot of last weeks preseason game I think he's on the "bubble" because of his contract. Although its not very high, its still more then he's worth at this point. He could become a sacrificial lamb at the end of the year to free up more money for Manny.

But like you said 3rd down backers will be very interesting. LaBoy makes for good depth but is injury prone, hence I don't see him becoming a starter or commanding a lot of money. Briggs is young and unproven, Brooks is still learning and is not ready for full time commitment. If Parys is not getting the sacks and holding the edge he will be substituted quickly which I hope happens.

But Manny needs to step up his game and get close to double digits this year, I'm thinking he needs 8 sacks, 1 int, and 2 FF to prove his worth. But when it comes time to $$$ he cant out price himself, if he wants a 5 year 25 mill contract..I would be cool with it. If he's asking for anything over 33ish mill then he can walk.

There was a report from one of the Matts over the past year that the starting point for Manny's new deal would be Calvin Pace's 6yr/42m 21.5m guaranteed deal that he signed in '08. Pace's career high in sacks at that point was 6.5, exactly the same as Manny coming into this season.

If you're wondering how high he might go, I doubt he'll be able to get more than James Harrison, who got 6yr/51.175m with 20m guaranteed last year. Then again like I've been saying, his agent is the same guy who represents Revis and Vincent Jackson so....

thanks for the list AB

QB Alex Smith(UFA) - hoping we have to resign him since it would indicate he finally got his s**t together
TE Vernon Davis(UFA)
C/OG Tony Wragge(UFA)
NT Aubrayo Franklin(UFA))
OLB Diyral Briggs(ERFA)
FS Dashon Goldson(UFA)

I guess those are the guys I'd sign. With Davis being my #1 priority

Briggs we could probably get for cheap, same with Wragge.

Franklin hopefully settles for less than what Ngata is likely to get.

And hopefully Goldson isn't too expensive to resign otherwise we probably have to start Reggie Smith.
Is Dashon Goldson a priority??????????? He has made a few good plays but Nate Clements seems to be a better fit at FS? Am i right?wrong?

ideally I would like to see both stay, nate on a redone deal, and Dashon at no more than 5M a yr.

So our secondary looks like this.

Nate
Shawntae
Adams
Draftee
Brown

Mays
Dashon
Smith
Taylor
I'll update it and say here are the guys we should look at resigning next year.

Highest Priority:
Dashon Goldson - Some of you guys would be ok with Reggie Smith taking his place. Reggie is getting better but I don't think he is on Goldson's level. Goldson may miss tackles and make some bad plays but he also gets INTs and creates turnovers.

Alex Smith - If he does well I don't see any other vet QBs that could come in and do better than Alex who would be experienced in this system.

Aubrayo Franklin/Manny Lawson - I say it will be one or the other or possibly neither. It depends on how much they want and how well Brooks/Briggs/LaBoy/Haralson play and how confident they are with RJF.

Medium Priority:
Ray McDonald - Could potentially take Soap's spot by the end of the year but I have mentioned before I'd like to upgrade this position next year.

David Baas/Tony Wragge - I say sign one or the other. Both can play guard and center. Baas is probably more expensive but is better.

Diyral Briggs - Depends on how much he gets to play this year and what he does in the those situations.

William James - Could easily be replaceable but we will see how he does this year. We have to upgrade the corner position next year.

Lowest Priority:
Takeo Spikes - Bowman has played outstanding and should be ready to go next year. If Spikes wants to sign for cheap as vet leader then fine. Otherwise, we can't really afford him.

Brian Westbrook - Depends on what he does but I'd like to think Dixon will be ready and we draft a 3rd RB next year.

Troy Smith - We could end up drafting a replacement next year or Davis could take his spot. Doubt who ever is after Carr gets any playing time anyways.

Let's not worry about Michael Lewis who will be gone. All the other guys as well are after thoughts. Side note... as for the franchise tag (just assume everything works out) now that Vernon Davis is signed it would go between:

Smith/Franklin/Lawson/Goldson. My goal after the season is to sign 2-3 of those players and tag the other if we need it. I'd like to not let more than 1 of those players go. We definitely should use it on one of the 4 if we can't sign them.
