Aubrayo Franklin - I think he goes elsewhere, hopefully RJF will be ready
Manny Lawson - If he doesn't lower demand he is probably gone
Ray McDonald - Sign for cheap... should compete with Soap for LDE
Takeo Spikes - Sign for vet min. as leader for Bowman, possibly starter
I'd re-sign everyone but Alex Smith and Dashon Goldson.
I bolded the guys I'd resign. I left Alex and Dashon off and Franklin too, he hasn't done s**t this year since he was so lazy in the offseason and now our run D is soft. Manny I might not re-sign but I dunno, I really want us to switch to a 4-3 and he might fit better as a 4-3 OLB.
Yah, I think its time to let Franklin walk too, he wanted to test free agency anyway. And I hope we don't re-sign Demetric Evans too, I'd rather we bring up Will Tukuafu, I like what I've seen in him, he has a good motor. And I'd also switch Sopoaga back to NT, mainly as a back or rotattional player with RJF and work in a rookie slowly. Sign Cullen Jenkins off of free agency (even though I think its gonna take some Quan to get him) and plug him in at LE, with Ray Mac backing him up.

Updating my thoughts:
Possible re-signings: (no particular order)
1. Troy Smith - if he plays like the first two games the rest of season pay him
2. Aubrayo Franklin - sign for decent amount (3 year 15-18 mil), otherwise let walk
3. Manny Lawson - If he doesn't lower demand he is probably gone
4. Takeo Spikes - Sign for vet min. as leader for Bowman, possibly starter
5. David Baas - Sign for cheap, not the greatest but serviceable, too many other areas to worry about
6. Ray McDonald - Sign for cheap, should compete with Soap for LDE
7. Tony Wragge - Versatile vet, sign for min.
Best to let walk:
1. Alex Smith - Best to cut ties
2. Dashon Goldson - Smith isn't a long term answer but we can have pay someone a lot less for the same results.
3. Demetric Evans - Probably gone after this year
4. Brian Westbrook - we don't even use him, he is probably gone
5. Jason Hill - no doubt he is gone, don't even see him on ST anymore
6. Barry Sims - will be 36, time to let Boone or Wragge take over as backup LT/RT and he hasn't dressed for a game yet.
7. Will James - Could go either way on this one but probably draft another corner leaving Spencer, Clements, Adams, Brown, draft pick/pickup
Possible Cuts:
1. Eric Heitmann - Career might be over, don't really need anymore
2. David Carr - We can find or draft another backup that is better. Next year's chart could look like Troy Smith, Nate Davis/veteran, draft pick/vet
3. Moran Norris - We can draft or pick up a better FB.
Restructurings:
Some people saying we should restructure Nate or cut him. I don't think we are in any place to cut him. If we let him go and James go we are down to Spencer, Adams and Brown.
I think these are the numbers left on Clement's contract.
2011: $7.25 million, 2012: $9 million, 2013: $10.77 million
If those are right I don't think we will have to restructure although AB mentioned 12 million or something like that. If it's that high we might want to look at it.
Possible Needs:
IF everything would turn out like that then needs would be FB, CB, FS, RG, Pass Rushing OLB, 2nd/3rd QB

Have to sign:
-Troy Smith: Obvious reasons
-Manny Lawson: He's finally developed into the player we drafted him to be.
-Ray McDonald: Possible starter and our best lineman on STs.
-Baas (OG/C)/Wragge (OT/OG): we need to retain atleast one of these guys for depth.
Cut ties:
-Spikes: He's lost a step. I don't think he's a starter beyond 2010.
-Goldson: Too inconsistant, hoepefully we shift to a coverage-focused secondary. Our front seven is capable of stopping the run. We essentially have two SSs and with a poor group of CBs, that's killing us in the passing game.
-Franklin: Unless he's willing to accept fair value, based on how he played this season, no thanks. He'll want to be paid based on how he played last year though.
-Norris: We need FB with ball skills, maybe an H-back fits our offense better. Either way, Vernon and Delanie make him expendable.
-Clements: He's not worth the money. He's a huge liability against speedy WRs. How many times do we have to watch him get beat on double moves for a big gain or TD? I love his physical play, but he hurts us more than he helps.

well said buddy.
Those Numbers for Nate I believe are his base salaries, so by cutting Nate next yr(2011), we would save a ton in the 2012 and 2013 yrs, we would take a hit in 2011, but still save around 7M ish

Hey buddy. To me Clements isn't as bad as people think and he's probably not worth the money but who else do we have? If we don't resign James and cut Clements we have Spencer, Adams and Brown. We need more than 3 CBs and we can't draft two guys and start 2 rookie corners and a 2nd year guy.
We will probably draft someone high so I think it should be:
Spencer, Clements, rookie high pick, Adams, Brown/vet pickup
or
Spencer, Clements, Adams, Brown, lower draft pick
If we pick someone in the first round they might be starting early on and Clements could be the slot/te guy. I just don't think we are matching Clements up right. He should be facing TEs and bigger WRs. Not just shoved in the slot even if that means covering a quicker guy like Amondola. I don't think we should be putting our LBs on TE's. Especially Spikes who isn't bad and won't give up a huge play because he is usually close by to make the tackle. He usually is a step behind and it's easy to get it in against him.
I don't really know but I would like to add some depth and a draft pick or two to the secondary (cb and a FS). Maybe change the defensive scheme around. Manusky has been putting us in bad situations from game one. Anyone else sick of all these two minute drives with bend don't break or prevent? We let them work down the field and end up losing.
Also, forgot about Travis Laboy. I would say if we draft a pass rushing LB and resign Lawson he is gone. If we don't draft a rush LB or don't sign Lawson we probably need him.
edit: Say we draft a CB high... hopefully in a year or less he's #1 or 2 and pushes everybody down the list making us a better team. I'd also like to see Adams more. Seen him make one tackle on a short pass he gave up. Brown has been doing a little better lately. Either way we have to upgrade the secondary for next year. We knew we had to this year and we didn't... guess what... it cost us
Also, like someone mentioned the new coach could totally overhaul this thing. We have 10 draft picks... they might not want to keep any of these guys. I'd like to bring in some new blood so we can't be too upset if they don't sign players we like. Also, for ILB depth we will be getting McKillop back so if we don't sign Spikes we could pick up a cheap vet and not waste a pick on it.

It's so tough to build through free agency because if a player is good they probably aren't leaving their old team. Plus the franchise tags make it even harder. Everyone you sign will be drastically overpaid. I wouldn't mind bringing in maybe one or two guys. Could maybe sign a few vets for cheap. Maybe one high priced guy....

Gore_21; Agreed 100&, I like Nate, and Id rather keep him and restructure his deal, of course it takes 2 to tango so to speak.
We need Nate to agree to it, so, im hoping it happens.

I'd add the Patriots in there too. They pretty much build through the draft and resign their own players for a reasonable price. They rarely sign other team's free agents, especially not big $ ones. Once in awhile they will trade for a player but never give up too much. They have a system and get players that fit it or teach them to fit in it. They know how to build a team and restock it.

Say Troy plays like he has the rest of the year and we re-sign him. Hopefully he would stick with us since we gave him a shot. Wonder what it would cost us? Shouldn't be too much and hopefully it wouldn't be too long of a deal. We should have some money to spend if Smith leaves, Goldson leaves, Franklin possibly, and the rest of those guys.
The guys I would consider re-signing would come in under the 55 mil I think you said we have to work with. Set aside a little for draft picks... I think we had 7 on the list, probably wouldn't leave a whole lot left for other team's free agents. Then again Spikes, McDonald, Wragge and Baas shouldn't cost too much. Lawson/Franklin could cost a bit and Troy who knows???
Things change quickly though... by the end of the year we could have a whole new set of priorities.
For 2012 we have:
Frank Gore
Ahmad Brooks
Joe Nedney
Josh Morgan
Reggie Smith
Ted Ginn Jr
Chilo Rachal
Cody Wallace
Adam Snyder
Moran Norris
David Carr
By then Gore and Nedney could be at the end of their careers. Not really worried about signing any of those guys. If Gore and Nedney are still playing well I would sign them. Other than that I could live without the rest. Maybe Morgan or Brooks. Half will probably already be off the team by this next year.
